We live in NC and my son should have the stats to be accepted to UNC. He is considering majoring in Computer Science. I'm curious about opinions on UNC for Computer Science vs. NC State vs. Clemson (assuming IS tuition) vs. Univ. of Alabama with large merit scholarship.

Well, admittedly, I don’t know much about Comp Sci at Alabama or Clemson, but I picked UNC over NC State for next year. I liked that UNC’s department was more focused on pure Computer Science rather than engineering (as State’s is), but if your son likes engineering, this may be a plus for State. UNC also offers a 5 year BS/MS program in Comp Sci, whereas State does not.

UNC is not known for Comp Sci, but I was very impressed after attending their open house and speaking with a couple professors. They were incredibly willing to help me and seemed to really care about my questions/concerns/interests.

Additionally, you will hear from many people who say to go to State over UNC for “anything technology-related.” I don’t believe this always holds true, and in fact, UNC’s graduate Comp Sci program is higher ranked than State’s.

Sorry I couldn’t help with Alabama or Clemson, but if you have any questions about my experiences with UNC or State, feel free to ask.

Good luck!

What kind of programming does he want to do? And where does he want to live afterwards? In my experience, the big companies in the Triangle (e.g. IBM, Cisco) recruit primarily from NC State, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. Which in no way means he won’t be able to get a job at these companies or others…he will…it just might be harder.

NC State also has a proactive program to help you get summer internships. UNC’s is much more passive.

I wasn’t very sure if i wanted to do cs at unc at first, but they actually have a really good department. As far as rankings go, it’s the highest ranked computer science department in NC, yes, even higher than nc state and duke. it’s ranked 20th in the nation, which is quite high.

(these rankings are for grad school but it’s all the same departments; they don’t do it for undergrad)
