I'm a CS major who's thinking of transferring to UVA for my Bachelors in CS from their college of Arts & Science. I have two importatn question that I can't fine anywhere online.

What is the curriculum like? I need to know what classes to take before transferring and also what to expect. I manged to fine the full curriculum with all the required classes for the CS degree from the school of engineering but I can't find one for the school of A&S.

What is it like? Are there any CS majors at UVA who can shed some light on this and let me know what the work load is like? How much reading do you have to do? What kind of homework assignments do you have to do, is it all just coding?

As far as requirements, google “uva ba cs” and you will find more information. There are two programs - the BS through the college of engineering (basically no cap) and the BA (currently capped and/or closed). I would get in touch with the contact listed on the main page (currently Worthy Martin) about whether you are allowed to tranfer in as a BA CS major (you can definitely transfer as a BS CS major to the engineering school but I’m not sure they allow transfers from the college or arts and sciences). Read up on those pages you find from google and you’ll see it’s completely interdisciplinary - integrating music, biology, math, or similar. If you’re looking for all coding then even the eschool major won’t get that for you. The eschool has a strong liberal arts flair to it as well with a thesis and lots of group projects. There’s a ton of reading in the more fluffy classes (equal reading to how much coding you do in other classes).

hazelorb, what does capped or closed mean? Does it mean they limit the number of CS majors in the program? At VA you have to declare a major on your application, don’t you? From past reading it looks like a smaller program at VA. It’s early but my sophomore son and I have been looking at it as he wants a BS in CS and he wants to go to UVA.

Yes, almost all of the engineering majors are capped. For non transfer students, they apply to their top few choices and based on grades they get a major. Systems has the strictest cap/is the most popular.

I also want to go to UVa for CS. How could you not want to meet the amazing Prof. David Evans?
