I'm considering applying to a few of the following schools for a major in Computer Science. Could you please rank the top few(5-6?) of them for Computer Science?

RIT-Rochester Institute of Technology
JHU
UChicago
Boston
PennState
USC
FIT-Florida Inst. of Tech.
SUNY, Stony Brook
Rice
Tufts
Ohio State
CMC-Claremont McKenna
Virginia Tech
Univ of Wisconsin at Madison
University of Washington
UNC Chapel Hill
Texas A&M
Georgetown

While good for computer engineering, Washington doesn’t have nearly that much presence in computer science, and is generally (from what I can see) perceived as overrated.

blue_box, why do you feel that UW is overrated? Perhaps, R&D folks at Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Boeing don’t know what they are talking about when they rave about UW’s CS program. btw, I know the distinction between CS and computer engineering and Seattle is my home town.

What about CMU? They have good Computer Science program.
Also University of Tulsa. Low standards according to CC people but still GREAT CS program!

That might be the case, yes. Keep in mind that these companies hire from a whole bunch load of universities, likely most of the ones on the OP’s list.

hey maxxy!!! i m surprised you didn’t rave about cs at uchicago. any cs program that starts off with functional programming in haskell should be great. besides, who wouldn’t want to take a class from L

Is is the School of Computer Science @ CMU that is famous. Computer Science department is part of SCS. Robotic Institute, Machine Learning, HCII, Institute for Software Research are all part of SCS. (Prof Raj Reddy was the founding director and largely responsible for making SCS what it is today.) All of these are world famous. ISR is affiliated with Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Capability Maturity Model, used worldwide , came out of SEI. I can go on and on …

Prof Randy Pauch who gave the Last Lecture taught at HCII.
