Computer Science Double Major in Art or English?

I'm kind of interested in both. Which major do you guys think will be more helpful later down the road?

Thoughts?

Art - Useless. I know grads from Art Center who rue the day they signed their admission papers. The only thing anyone cares about is your portfolio.

English - Useless, in the context of a double major. If you want to go to grad school for English, I guess you should.

Unless you just want to double major for the love of learning, you probably should just focus on CS and pursue art/English studies on your own and save a lot of money.

Some art knowledge may be useful if you go into graphics and game development. It may not be worth it to jump through all of the hoops to complete a second major, though.

Do CS, unless if you are sure about the other things.

Although, if you like writing, definitely take a lot of writing courses in college. Writing clearly and persuasively is an invaluable skill, even in the world of software development.

Double majoring in CS is nearly impossible, unless it’s a mediocre department. Your classes will have massive projects, and you simply wont have time for another major. If you do think you can, it will come at an expense of a low GPA.

Mark my words, and if anyone thinks I’m wrong, accept my challenge.

The reason I’m double majoring is because of the way my credits panned out. I’ve finished everything except the classes for my major. Unfortunately, I can’t just take 4 CS classes a semester because they have prerequisites. I’ll have to take them step by step and this basically means I’ll only be able to take 2 CS classes a semester.

I need more classes to be full time so basically double majoring seems like a “might as well” situation for me. My counselor recommended double majoring as well since I need more classes anyway.

I looked through the list of majors and English and Art seemed like interesting ones to me. Any other suggestions would be cool though. Math seems like a common choice but entire semesters of just Math and CS classes sounds like it’d be pretty boring. I go to UMD-CP if it matters.

I mean if you just want to go ahead and pick up one of those majors for fun go ahead, but I’d be surprised if either one helps you much when you’re already getting a CS degree.

I would like to double major in English and CS also. I would like to know how it worked out for you. I took a bunch of classes in college for fun then realized I could make, possibly, two majors out of the them.

Old thread.
