Are there any top 30 schools (let’s just use US News for simplicity) in which computer science is offered exclusively in the engineering colleges and not in any of its other colleges? (For example, Columbia wouldn’t count because the school offers CS in both its engineering school and Columbia College). Thanks!
UCLA, USC, Vanderbilt, WUStL, UPenn?
Note that some schools have CS in its own division (e.g. CMU). Others are not divided into divisions. Some of the latter have general education requirements that include lots of non-CS science, like in engineering-based CS majors (e.g. MIT). Whether changing major to CS or across divisions is difficult also depends on the school.
Why is this a concern?
Alright! I’m concerned because as I’m applying I’m trying to figure whether I will have to take either the chemistry or physics SAT subject tests (I heard some engineering schools require this?) in order to apply to certain schools as a CS major. I really do not want to have to take one, because I’m already happy with my Bio score (which would be sufficient for the Cornell Engineering or CMU SCS requirement for a science subject test). Would you, or anyone else, know about this? Thanks again!
Look at each college’s admission web site to find out what it wants.
Do you have test date conflicts? It seems pretty short sighted to make your college list based on not wanting to take a subject test. . Your main goal should be finding a schools that are a good “fit” and are affordable to your family.
If you are qualified for top 30 engineering schools, you probably would do OK on physics (or chem) subject test. (If you don’t do well, I think it is possible to selectively not send it later - others can correct me if that is no longer the case).

I had never heard of subject tests until fall of my senior year of high school (yay midwest), so I eliminated huge swathes of possible colleges as a result.
I understand your situation @nanotechnology. (It happened to a friend’s son… . if I had realized his small private school GC wouldn’t mention it I would have told them.). But OP still has time to sign up.
