I know a lot of schools prefer letters of recommendation from 2 teachers who taught you in different core academic subjects. Would computer science count as an acceptable subject (at Harvard to be specific)?
My physics teacher and computer science teacher already submitted their recommendations, so right now I’m just trying to gauge whether I should send my English teacher’s recommendation or not. If Harvard has no problem with computer science letters of recommendation then i will not send my English teacher’s letter.
I don’t see why they should have trouble with a letter from your computer science teacher.
@notjoe Ok so would computer science be considered a core subject then cause it is kinda related to math? At my school it’s part of the math department, but on the common app the letter that my comp sci teacher sent in was listed as “other” instead of “math”.
How long have you been taking computer science? One semester? One year? One-and-a-half years? Two years? It’s important to remember that Harvard’s Dean of Computer Science, Harry Lewis, who taught both Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg sits on the Admissions Committee. So, if you and your teachers are promoting your CS abilities, they’d better be at the top of your game, regardless of whether CS is listed at your high school under the math department.
@gibby I was only able to have my CS teacher for 1 year during my AP Comp Sci class, but during that time she certainly got to know me well. I was also a very good student in her class, so I’m pretty certain she had plenty of good things to say about me. So I’m guessing from your response that a CS recommendation is just fine?
A CS teacher is fine for one of your teacher recs.
