I am transferring from a CC to a UC and my major is Computer Science. I have been through some personal issues and my GPA will either be a 3.37 or a 3.42 when I apply for colleges. If I get under a 3.4 then I will TAG UCSC and if I get above it I will TAG UCI so either way I’ll atleast have one school that I’ll get into.
But my question is, what can I do to improve my chances the most? I understand that it’s too late too really have a good shot at getting into most UC schools which I’ve already came to reality with but what can I do right now to improve my chances?
By that I mean, what kind of ECs can I pursue? What are some tips for my personal essays? Sorry if this is a really generic question but I just wish for some insight.
I got into ucsc with a 3.34. As long as you have all of their Major requirements you will be fine.(santa cruz) for davis usually missing one or two is omay and for irvine it is best to tag(take some Ge’s in the summer and boost your gpa to a 3.4)
Good luck!
@ImTryingMyBest1 I don’t think 3.37-3.42 is low for a CC TAG transfer student in Comp. Science. Although I’m not planning to TAG to UCSC or UCI, I’m also a TAG transfer (Cognitive Science with 90% of the coursework in Comp. Science) and still have 20 units left, so there is a real chance that my final GPA can fall from 3.93. Since we’re supposed to TAG one semester or one full academic year before transferring (depending of the UC), there is no way to predict our final GPA, and some of the IGETC requirements are tough (that physics course with electromagnetism comes to my mind :P).
I’m by no means an expert in TAG applications, but I haven’t seen any essay options in my form, just very concrete questions that can be answered in 350 characters at most. You can talk to your transfer counselor to be sure, but I tend to agree with nottom12brady, if you meet all of their requirements and maintain your GPA, I’d feel confident about your chances. Good luck!
@smsk I managed to retake some tests and stuff throughout last semester so I think my GPA will be a 3.5 when I submit my TAG application. Do you think that’s still too low or will that give me a better chance of getting into some UCs?
@ImTryingMyBest1 I think you’re a strong applicant. Come on, I seriously doubt that out of 189 CC transfer candidates (the total number of Comp. Sci. students that got accepted at UCI during Fall 16’) all of them had a GPA above 3.5 AND met all of the transfer requirements? During the graduation ceremony, I’ve spotted just one person who graduated with a Comp. Sci. Honors Transfer Degree at my CC. Unless my CC is not representative of the average CC population in California, I’d feel cautiously optimistic about my chances!
@ImTryingMyBest1 For some UCs it might depend on your ECs and what you’ve accomplished. With typical amount of EC and a 3.5, I think you should be able to get into SC, Riverside, Davis, SB and Irvine (With a TAG). SD is a long shot though.
