After getting into every school I applied to, I've narrowed down my choices a bit however I'm having a hard time deciding. My major is computer science. I've visited all the campuses and think I would feel comfortable attending wherever I go. My top choice is Maryland, but it's going to be at ~$30k cost of attendance (after scholarships, grants and work study) vs. ~$20k for both Stony Brook and Umass. Maryland has the highest ranked program and was my favorite campus and school by far but is it worth the extra $10k/year? Money is a big factor for us so It's not so easy to make the decision. Any thoughts?

All three are very strong for CS.

I know, but will it make much of a difference as far as recognition depending on where I go?

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Stony Brook is a very different place. If you were from Long Island you would understand. It is not going to provide the “college” experience that Maryland will.

Thank you for your input. I was kind of afraid of this. I read that many people aren’t around on the weekends. The campus didn’t seem as lively as UMass or Maryland.

Bump for extra thoughts?

I appealed my decision for Maryland and they increased one of my scholarships by ~2.5k
Now it’s looking like Maryland for ~27.5k, UMass for ~21k or Stony Brook for ~19k

The closer I get to decision time, the more I’m leaning towards Maryland. I really feel like I would enjoy myself the most and get the most out of my college experience if I went there. Is this smart or am I stupid to put myself in +$30,000 extra debt?

I don’t think it’s too much or stupid at all if you make sure you do well. You are going into a lucrative field. 30K at 8% over 10 years is $363 a month. Life is long, you will be able to afford this.

Its a close call. I might opt for Maryland if you can keep the costs down in other ways. You can budget to make it happen if you are careful with your non necessity expenditures.
