Hi, I'm currently majoring in Computer Science and I found this major really interesting. So, I was planning to pursue my career as a computer programmer in the future. However, one of my cousins graduated from UC Berkeley as a EECS major and he told me how he hates his job after he graduated because all he had to do was to sit down and program for 10 hours a day... and he had to do what the manager tells him to do so. So, he recommended me to at least minor in business so I can broaden my options in the future. My school offers a major called "business informatics" and the curriculum is basically half cs courses and half business courses. What do you guys think? Will Business Informatics broaden my options in the future? I like CS, but I wouldn't want to do such deskjob for the rest of my life.. Thank you guys!

What exactly do you think a “business informatics” major will be doing at the entry level that a computer science major can’t do?

I can count on one hand the number of times I worked 10 hour days and did not get paid for it. Now maybe being a fresh grad, he either did not know about the project plan of his project or they did not tell him, but one needs to know about a typical day and DOES NOT HURT to ask about average hours per week.

I have been on interviews and was told that a project was behind schedule and/or facing budget constraints.

…and I told the company “thanks but no thanks”.

"What benefits to the graduate and the hiring firm do you see in a job candidate who has an IT degree with a business school background vs. a media arts or vs. a computer science program?

Which jobs are MIS students best suited for vs. a media arts student or vs. a computer science student?

As a versus point, a computer science major might be better suited for a DBA or a Developer role. And a Media Arts major may be a UI developer or a graphics designer or go into marketing.

(3) how would a media arts major or a computer science major be helped in getting and doing a job by also getting a minor in Business Administration with an MIS concentration (also consider this question if they have only 1 or 2 classes extra they would need to get the minor)?

Special thanks to some random guy from linkedin.

Solution…

1) Do CS or Math/CS as an undergrad

2) Take the business-related courses in grad school, either part of an MBA, Systems Engineering or Engineering Management program.

For project management, it is better to do the PMP certification.

Still do grad school. There will be positions that will say something like:

B.S. + 12 years or M.S. + 8 years.

Do the M.S. to “check off that box”.
