i'm a senior in high school right now, trying to decided between biochemistry and computer science. if i choose biochem, then i'll go to med school, and if i choose cs, i'll probably just be a software developer. i understand i can major in cs and be a pre med, but i'd rather not. anyways, i'm definitely sure that i'd rather be a doctor than a software developer. the only thing i'm worried about is that if i screw up, (i'm not the best of students) then i'd end up with a biochem degree and limited career options. but if i go with cs, i'd not be as happy, but still pretty content. which should i choose? thanks

It’s still unclear to me why you don’t want to major in computer science and just take the extra 4-5 courses required for premed. Problem solved.

b/c it will harm my gpa (like i said, i’m not the best of students)

Biochem is not a lot easier than CS, if at all.

These are on opposite spectrum of thinking process. CS require no memorization, pure analytical skill, logical thinking. Medicine requires this also, most of material is hard core memorization that is by far not for everybody, extremely hard and will get much harder in Med. School. Biochem is somewhat easier than the rest of medical science as it is more conceptual material.
Saying that you are not the best student will not work. If you are planning on medicine, you got to become the best of the best, working very hard for many many years…it will not work otherwise.

This post sums it up. You need to consider how you’re going to ace those classes. If you’re not a good student, the chances of you getting into medical school, then surviving medical school, are not high. Re-assess your study habits and find out what went wrong in high school. Then try to do well in college. It’s not going to get easier from here on.

Biochem is NOT an easy major, btw. You have a few hard classes, like the notorious Pchem! :O

Also depends on what colleges you got into…what did you get into?

hi, i’ll be attending tx state university this fall, what scares me about computer science is high number of math classes required, and in addition i’ll have to take a pre med curriculum. with biochem, all the pre med curriculum is pretty much included.

What are the math requirements for biochem? At my school it’s Cal III (required) diffEQ (strongly suggested). The math will be used in pchem or biopchem which are required for a biochem degree.

just because biochem isn’t an engineering major doesn’t mean it’s lala land gpa wise. just try comp sci major w/ premed reqs. if you end up with a decent gpa, go onto med school, if not, go pursue your cs career.

MATG is the LEAST OF YOUR CONCERN. Absolute the least time consuming…in either major, you are talking about tremendous efforsts well outside of your worries about math. In CS, be prepared to spend day and night debugging your programs and as a pre-med you are talking about even much much more hard work and longer hours and plus all kind of EC’s that Med. Schools will be looking for in your application. Forget Math, math is nothing compared to everything else in both cases. I have been IT proffessional for over 3 decades, whriting software and having great fun with it. I am also a parent of Medical Student who is finishing her first year at Med. School. So, I am pretty familiar with both either thru my own experience or my kid experience.
