Does anyone know anything about Juniata's Computer Science program? How large is it? How challenging and comprehensive is it? Are the students there happy with the program?

Thank you.

Does anyone know anything about Juniata's Computer Science program? How large is it? How challenging and comprehensive is it? Are the students there happy with the program?

Thank you.

I am one of Juniata’s alum, class of 08. I graduated with a BA in Study of Digital Technologies and Politics. Juniata’s CS program isn’t that big, however, it is absolutely awesome. The reason being Juniata has a system of making your own major, which allows you to go as in-depth and comprehensive as you want with the program. The faculty is amazing since they are very supportive and will guide you on however comprehensive YOU want the program to be.

Juniata’s Campus Technology Services which overseas all campus technology depends heavily on student managers. They give student managers responsibilities that you would usually find a full time staff with over 5 years of experience would have. Here is an article about the program.

[EDTECH: Focus On Higher Education - Who’s in Charge?](http://www.edtechmag.com/higher/march-april-2007/who-s-in-charge.html)

I was one of the managers and to be honest I came out with management experience straight out of college, which would have otherwise taken be couple years to achieve. The best part is Juniata teaches you how to learn. I hope that helps, if you have any questions please feel free to email me!

Jigar, thanks for posting the article and congratulations on your success!

pateljj04- thanks for the information. The POE is one of the reasons D is attracted to the school. Would you be willing to discuss campus life at Juniata? How satisfied were you with the weekend activities? Food, etc?

Thanks - Northeastmom

I absolutely loved campus life, loved it so much that I worked on campus for 4 years during the summers as well. Juniata prides on the fact that even though its in the middle of nowhere it always has something planned on the weekend for students. The Student Activities and Student Government do a pretty good job at having something every friday and saturday night. They also have stuff planned for the few students that are there working over the summer. As for food…Baker which is their main cafe, the food isn’t the greatest to be honest, but recently my senior year they had opened up Eagles Landing which has pretty good variety and pretty good food. I ended up going there for most of my meals.

If you are into sports then you are in for a treat, our volleyball team is one of the best in the country so usually when they are playing at home, almost everyone is there! There are also club sports so if you are into something that Juniata doesn’t have you can go to student government and open up your own club. In fact if you find that you get a group together and want to form a club you can do it in an afternoon, its that easy.

The only thing I want to warn you about is that Juniata is a small school, a small community, so if you come from a big city you might find it difficult at first since, you will get to know pretty much everyone there, but I promise you will get use to it.

pateljj04,
Thanks for sharing. Not too worried about the food since my D only eats such a limited diet (staples like mac and cheese, grilled cheese etc.) And I’m sure Juniata can manage those!
Is there an area (or areas) on campus where students congregate for example to play pool, games etc. Wasn’t sure about there being a student union.
How are the dorms?

Just so everyone knows, regarding meal plans, outside of Baker (one dining hall), one can only eat at Eagle or other places on campus using DCB (declining cash balance) dollars, so you cannot use your meal card swipe to eat anywhere other than at Baker. Here is the link for further information:

Good questions, holliesue.

They do have a sorta Student Hangout place in Ellis which is the main building where student activities, stud gov and other departments are. The dorm are nice, I lived on campus for 3 years, senior year I lived on College own house off-campus so there are options to where to live. They also have Wellness floor’s which is where I lived my Freshmen year. I would say if you can pay a visit to Juniata def go down and check it out.

Northeastmom - Its true that you have to use DCB for Eagles Landing however there is something call Meal Exchange where you can use your meal plan at 3 other cafe’s on campus for meals. But Meal Exchange has limited Menu! I am not sure if the site mentions that or not.

No, I did not see that, so thanks. I’ll see if I can find the info on their website. Don’t you get so so tired of eating at Baker daily for four years?

Here is the link for Meal Exchange [Juniata College - Dining Services - Eagles Landing Meal Exchange Policy](http://www.juniata.edu/services/dining/muddymealexchange.html)

Haha, surprisingly no, there are many options in Baker, so there is always something different there to eat. Once you get use to it, people make their own recipe from food there!

patel- thanks for all the info!

pateljj04, thanks! That sounds pretty good. So when you say that you ate most of meals at Eagle, does that mean that you were paying for a meal plan, and then paying additionally out of pocket, other than when you bought a sub from Eagle through a meal exchange?

I had I think the 110 meals a semester plus $300 on dcb which lasted me the entire semester, I also got coffee pretty much every morning, so that lasted me the entire semester. I usually didn’t go to breakfast just grabbed something with coffee. Meal Exchange for lunch was 3 different options so i switched up and if I got tired I went to Baker.

Thank you for explaining the meal plan.

pateljj04, thank you for taking the time to reply, this is very helpful!

<<bump>> very helpful post from pateljj04</bump>
