I applied for TAG for Davis and Irvine. Both accepted, but I put Java: Data structures as a planned course, which I found out is an online only course at my CC, and that discourages me from taking it based on advice from other students and the teacher herself.

1) I have completed calc 1, 2, English 1, 2, chem 1, 2, java and C++, and some GE's, and currently taking Linear algebra, but is Java Data Structures required to transfer?

2) I'm planning to take Discrete Math, a lower division major of both Davis and Irvine. Berkeley wants Differential equations, and UCSC and UCSD want Multivariable calculus.... Which is the best choice to take? Will they be picky about this one differing math course in deciding my admission?

Hi mrfoisp, what is your GPA? If it isn’t too high, then you should play it safe and go for UCSC and UCSD instead of putting all of your eggs in the basket. Usually Multivariable Calculus is a prereq for Differential equations. And yes they will be picky for all prereqs must be completed prior to transfer. (Everything on Assist). What school are you in?

Currently I have a 4.0 GPA, and going to CSM. The thing is though, UCI tag says you need 1 year of calc, and 1 year of comp sci classes. I did those things but I put data structures as planned and now I don’t think I should take it.

Also, I don’t know if it’s a prerequisite at other schools, but at CSM, the prereq for discrete math is calc 1.

It’s not about being lazy and taking the easy way out. I would take all the math I can if I had the time, but UCI and UCD want discrete, and do not want multivariable… so wouldn’t that be a waste of time?

Thanks for your help. Btw where do you go @xcaliberse?

Wow, we’re in the same district. I’m at Skyline College! I go to CSM sometimes. I was about to go to CSM this semester too… I am planning to major in CS too. By the way, yes you need to pass Math 253 before you’re eligible to take Differential equations. There is no way to skip it. I’m taking Multivariable this semester. Taking Linear Alg/Diff Eq next sem. Im gonna be a computer science major too. Current GPA 4.0 as well. What I’m telling you is to just take Multivariable Calculus first then Differential Equations. Data structures is not comparable to the UC Berkeley CS 61B by the way. Do you have the 7 course breadth completed? I hope you do know that UC Berkeley’s CS in (L&S) has its separate requirements. Or were you applying for EECS?

Oh that’s cool haha, but I think you’re confusing differential equations with discrete math(268). Yes, differential eqns does require 253, but discrete does not which is sort of a problem for me because I cannot take 275 without 253, and I only have 1 semester left.

If L&S breadth = IGETC, then yes, I will be done with that.

Would they really reject you for not having 1 math class away from all their requirements?

Btw, What have you taken so far and where are you applying? Also did you apply for tag?

I spoke with a Berkeley admissions officer and she told me that 100% of prereqs MUST be completed prior to transfer. I’m pretty much finished with all prereqs except for Linear Alg/Differential equations. Instead of IGETC, I chose to do the 7 course breadth of UC Berkeley because the other schools would be in engineering which doesn’t require IGETC. I’m applying to Cal as my main choice currently. I’m a one year transfer. The reason why I am able to pull it off is because I was concurrently enrolled at a community college since my junior of high school. Do you have AIM or MSN? Skype? Let’s chat.
