Hi,
I am an upcoming senior in High School and I want to pursue a major that involves programming such as computer science. However, if I graduate with computer science major, what type of jobs can I do? Like can I graduate with a cs degree and become a software engineer or IT? Or that is a different major? Some colleges only list computer science and I don’t see any college that list software engineer or IT as one of their majors. So are positions such as software engineer, IT, programmers all fall under computer science major?
Thank you
CS covers a lot in the technical fields and a vast majority of tech jobs list a CS degree as required or preferred.
I’m pretty sure software engineers, IT guys, programmers, et al all are under the CS umbrella.
The list you just wrote dont need any kind of degree… (technically though ofc u can say this to almost all jobs…)
IT can be done in 2 years by certificate
Programmers (similar to IT) are usually the grunt lesser paid workers
Software engineers are pretty much glorified high paid programmers.
That said, yes, usually for people considering those jobs, computer science degree is the one they aim for if they decide on a 4 year degree. However, note it is possible to break in those jobs with majors like math, physics, computer engineering, electrical engineering. And once a while you see a philosophy or english major… so (one student going for phd i know did her undergrad english literature xD)
