I am currently debating between what majors to choose and it is hard because I finish my pre-reqs this summer and I don’t want to choose a career that I wouldn’t like. I am between nursing and computer science.
I’ll be honest, I have no experience in any coding and am in elementary algebra right now but I wouldn’t mind taking the extra courses for math as needed. But how hard is it if I am willing to do it without any relevant experience?
I have taken Psychology, Elementary Algebra, Biology, Communications and Nutrition. The course that are related to my Nursing path but I won’t start until next year.
I thought about double majoring in Community College but I don’t know if that would be a good idea.
Am curious what attracts you to each of these majors. For example, are you drawn toward nursing because you like to enjoy working directly with people and like to help them? Are you drawn toward computer science because you have always enjoyed tinkering with/on computers, and are a logical thinker? Would you be happy spending hours on end at the computer, or would you be happier interacting directly with people for hours on end? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself in order to avoid “choosing a career you wouldn’t like”.
That’s the hard part I am still figuring out! I absolutely enjoying helping people and hearing about life stories and experiences that I can hold on. However, I have always been a logical person who loved figuring out issues and problems by taking things apart, thinking outside the box and being able to look at different aspects. I love both but I feel as though I could get both in CS, its just that I would be working independently and with other people.
I was accepted into a nursing program and now I am pursuing CS, haha. If you’re good at math, then I would definitely try CS. It is almost entirely math. I don’t recommend majoring in both. I’m pretty sure that is impossible and your community college wouldn’t let you. While you can change people’s lives through nursing, you can change the world through computer science!
