How is the Computer Science major like at Smith?
How are the CS professors? What CS electives are offered?

Hi, I’m a CS major at Smith. Or well, I haven’t declared my major yet, but I’m going to do it soon.

The professors are great, they are extremely kind and they are super helpful during office hours. Dominique Thiebaut (my advisor), for example, is a fantastic teacher. I’ve never taken a class with him, but I’m the student TA(teaching assistant) during one of his lab sessions, and he’s extremely helpful.

I don’t know all of the electives because I’m trying to cover the core requirements first, but you can see the courses here, just select the CS department:

I really like the department, not all classes are easy, but there is a lot of help available. Even if you can’t go to office hours, you can go to TA hours. There are student TAs for around 2 hours most weekdays, and they’re extremely helpful. I don’t think I’d be alive without the ones for Data Structures, haha.

The department is rather small, but it’s extremely helpful, so I don’t mind at all. It’s extremely nice being able to ask the professor questions directly, which would most definitely not be possible at larger schools. But if you ever wanted to, you could take classes at UMass too, CS is one of its strongest departments.

Definitely look into it, I think it’s a great department :)

CS UMass is one of the top programs in the nation.
