Computer Situation @ Brown

tigerdirect and newegg have the best deals online for pc’s

i guess im not surprised the NP’s and Mochamp, etc are open to each other

Here’s what I’ve found, as far as my friends and whose laptops go where:

In addition, smaller laptops typically run longer on one battery charge, so there’s more incentive to take them with, because you won’t have to find an outlet.

the netbooks don’t all have the best battery life though. of course you could be cool like me and not even have a laptop at Brown lol

how do you go to college without a laptop? you have a desktop then?

yes i do…much harder to steal as well  (but im not at brown anymore)

you know, that isnt a bad idea haha. are you living off campus?

I always had a desktop at Brown. Way more power for the same money, harder to steal, much more pleasant to work on. I had a handful of friends with them-- we were pretty much exclusively science people with a little geek in us because we wanted the power over the portability.

IMO, you’d be better served with a solid desktop + cheap laptop that’s just good enough to type on and do basic surfing than a solid laptop.

Of course, it’s really only viable if you drive up to Brown, which you would.

you know, thats not a bad idea. i will definitely consider that. do you have a pc or mac?

PC. Mac’s are so ridiculously overpriced for what you get that even some of my friends who are huge Mac fans have switched back recently.

I love OSX, and it really does depend on a lot of personal choice factors, but for me I’ll take my PC’s 2x the computer at the same price over a Mac any day. I’m not a huge fan of Windows, but I can make it work for me. In the end, I use Linux most of the time anyway.

^ Totally Agree

i have a mac at home and i think itsthe greatest thing ever. but finances do play a huge part into my decision so we will see what kind of deals they have. i heard that lat year if you buy a mac for school after may 1, you get 100 dollars off and a free ipod touch. i kinda like that deal.

[Apple Computers](http://www.brownbookstoretechcenter.com/apple.htm) from Brown.

Joe I no longer attend Brown but I do work there.

oh dear, modestmelody, you’re a PC person. :-(.

joe, you’re asking good questions, but don’t buy a computer yet – wait until the summer.

The prices offered at the bookstore for Macs are the standard educational discount.

ok, yeah i just talked to my uncle and he said they might have a better version by august so i think im gonna hold off until then.

If you’re going to get a Mac, I recommend getting one soon after a new model is released. It really sucks if you buy one and it’s outdated in a month.

If you’re planning on getting a MacBook Pro, I expect a minor update this Wednesday when Apple announces their tablet. According to [Macrumors.com’s Buyer’s Guide](<a href=“MacRumors Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy iPhone, Mac, iPad”>MacRumors Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy iPhone, Mac, iPad), the MacBook Pro is overdue for a refresh. If I’m right though, and if past patterns continue, there should be a second update around late August or September.

Also, if you don’t plan on buying another computer within your four years of undergrad, you might want to consider a [Apple Developer Connection student membership](http://developer.apple.com/products/membership.html). It costs $99, but I read it comes with a one-time hardware discount better than what is normally provided through the education store. For lower-end models, it’s likely not worth it and you should just use the regular educational discount. But if you’re going to go all out on your computer, I’ve read it’s a better deal to use the ADC discount. The discount varies, but I’ve heard the number 20% thrown around, so anything more than $2,000 would warrant an ADC membership. You also get a hot t-shirt if you become an ADC member.
