Hey y’all! I will be attending Wake Forest next fall & need some help choosing a laptop. I got a WakeWare grant to cover a Dell XPS 13 Non-Touch. However, I am not sure if my major (Biochemistry) or minor (Politics & International Affairs) would prefer the software that comes with a MacBook. I will also be studying abroad my first year & will need something small & easy to travel with.
Additionally, is there some social faux pas having a computer other than a MacBook? I have never had an Apple computer and am hesitant to switch over, but I am worried about looking like a scholarship kid if I don’t upgrade. Thank you for any help y’all can provide
@I’mstressedwfu Does your grant only cover a Dell computer or can you use it towards a Mac? Macs are definitely more expensive. My son just finished his sophomore year and he has a Mac. But that is because we are Apple people and always have been. Since Wake doesn’t tell you that you need a specific computer by major I would assume that you can use any computer. Honestly I think most kids use whatever kind of computer they are used to and not based on financial status. My son said he doesn’t notice what kind of computer others kids use if that helps at all. Good Luck and welcome to the Forest!!
Yes, @lbf the money from my grant would go toward any computer I want to buy. A MacBook costs about $350 more than the Dell; therefore, I would only have to pay $350 for the upgrade from Dell to MacBook.
Don’t be stressed. You can probably speak to the folks at Wakeware and ask them if your area of study is better served with a MAC. They likely will tell you either is fine and both are supported.
One thing you’ll find about Wake Forest is the staff is incredibly helpful and responsive. If you have a question, ask. They really want to help.
Soon you’ll be getting the Forestry 101 book. It’s a guide to all things Wake. Great resource but ask questions if you don’t understand something. There will be a calendar of events / requirements to knock off over the summer. It looks like a lot, but it really isn’t. Don’t get stressed.
