My son is an entering freshman and will be living on North Campus in a quad as part of a Scholars program. He has his own laptop…do students generally bring their own printers for their rooms…or is it more economical/advantageous to print in one of the computer labs on campus? Anyone with experience on this…let me know what you think. Thanks!

I had that same question, too. In addition, I was wondering about what things I need to bring to hook up the laptop. I thought everything was wireless nowadays. My friend thinks they had to provide some kind of cables or something two years ago. Then she said, "Maybe that was for something else." Anyone?

I am pretty certain that all the dorms (and most of the rest of campus) are wireless now. But we still plan to bring a 10 foot ethernet cable just in case (downtime, etc.). I have heard that some kids use the network printing capabilities at the libraries and other buildings by printing over the network and using their BuckID to pay printing charges. Then they pick stuff up where they want it. However, we plan to bring a printer since we have an extra one anyway.

We bought a small HP printer on clearance and 2 extra printer cartridges. Sometimes you need to see the rough draft and having your own printer is so much easier.

One thing I wish I had brought last year was a printer...there are plenty of computer labs with printers, but it would have been much nicer to have one in the room. And the dorms have wireless mostly, but you should still bring an ethernet cable.
