I am trying to choose which college to attend. My goal is to major in accounting, but when I look at the top colleges like the University of Pennsylvania they do not have undergraduate majors in accounting but instead offer accounting concentrations.

My questions are: should I go to the top schools and choose accounting as a concentration? Or is it better to go to a school that's a little less prestigious and actually major in accounting? Are there any specific pros and cons to each choice if I am only interested in becoming an accountant?

It doesn’t really matter if it is a concentration or major as long as the courses qualify you to sit for the CPA/CMA/CIA exam. Each school will be able to answer that question.

UT Austin and Lehigh are both reallllyyyyyy good in accounting. I suggest checking those out. It doesn’t really matter the school as much as who recruits. For Lehigh, the Big 4 heavily recruit there. So I don’t think it matters where you once you land a job at say…Deloitte or Ernest and Young.

Keep in mind many states require 150 credits to sit for the CPA exam, so you’ll either have to do a 5 year bachelor’s program or a bachelor’s and a one year accounting master’s. I’d major in business in undergrad and do the MS in accounting.
