Is it possible to apply to the honors program after admission to UW? Or do you have to do it at the same time you submit your freshman application? I'm not sure if I want to enroll now, but might feel like going for it if I get accepted into the school.

Also, does anyone have info about the turbo admit program they have? I've heard that UW admits highly-qualified students quickly; a few of my friends received their acceptance a month ago.

Yes, you have to apply at the same time. The honors application is included is included in the normal application, so if you want to be considered you must apply at the same time. If you haven't applied yet, I encourage you to do so--it can't hurt.

And as far as information, are you asking whether they do it or not? Because yes, they do. I think only a few people get their decisions as late as April.

My main problem is I haven't got the recs out to the teachers, and it is way too late now :(
So it's not possible to apply as a freshman at UW hm?

Also, if a well-qualified applicant submitted during the deadline, are there any estimates as to when he/she will receive notice?

There are several options for honors at UW, in addition to applying as a freshman:

Applying to COLLEGE HONORS

Entering freshman applicants apply to the University of Washington and to the UW College Honors Program simultaneously.

Students who are already enrolled at the UW may apply for Late Admission into the College Honors program during spring quarter of their freshman year. Each spring quarter, we accept applications from current freshmen and issue invitations to those who have demonstrated academic excellence during their first two quarters at the university. If you believe this option best fits your needs, please contact an Honors advisor for more information.

Applying to DEPARTMENTAL HONORS

Another way to experience Honors is through your major. Typically, a student applies for departmental admission in his or her junior year of college, although some majors have earlier entrance options. Departmental Honors is an excellent option, providing academic challenges and scholarly community similar to the College Honors experience. Please see the Departmental Honors page for more information about this Honors track.

You've got until the 15th, and only one recommendation is allowed. Can you do it in a day? I think a huge benefit of the honors program comes at the beginning of freshman year, because you have an automatic cohort of peers that you'll get to know through honors activities. Might be worth a push.

I believe you have to send the application on paper if you are not applying simultaneously with the regular university on-line application. Check the instructions. Good luck!

I applied to Honors two years ago as a freshman but wasn't sure that I wanted to do it because I thought it would be extra work like AP and Honors courses in high school. Little did I know that Honors courses are exactly the kind of courses that I always wanted in high school--courses where I learned to think rather than learn to regurgitate. I was accepted as a freshman applicant and then decided that I'd try it out for a quarter to see if I liked it. I'm so glad that I did because it's made my college experience so much better through its smaller community, personal advisors, and outstanding professors who care more about my learning than their own research. Even if you end up not applying as a freshman, keep the late admissions option in mind for after you get to UW. It'll be worth your time to check it out. If you want to know more, feel free to send me an email.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The info was very helpful

Proud Husky: If I end up being accepted and attend UW, I will for sure try for a late admit into the honors program. Thanks for offering to tell me more about it.
