I have a few questions about the band (Kiltie?) at CMU. I had tried to look up this information at the CMU website but I didn't find it that helpful (maybe they've updated it since...)

How does one join the concert band? Does one have to audition for it? You don't have to join the marching band to be in concert band, do you? And for those who've been in the band(s), is it possible to balance academics and band and still be able to keep a good GPA, especially freshman year?

In case you're wondering: I play flute, was first chair in my band (made All-State my senior year) and I love playing flute but am rather serious about studies as well. All though high school, though, I'd study in band class (when the flutes weren't playing XD) :)

I'm pretty sure that for Kiltie band you just have show up to (most of) the practices and they'll be happy to have you. If you're interested, there's also All University Orchestra, which has the same policy- show up to practices, and you're in.

Yeah, the AUO has a website with recordings of their concerts, so you can go check them out. One of the guys that went to my high school (all-state and head drum major) is in both AUO and the Kiltie Band, and he says they are pretty nice, so I am hoping to join as well.

I played the flute too! As well as the piccolo.

Or maybe you shouldn't go to the AUO website, because then you'll be a bit saddened by our lack of awesomeness...

lack of awesomeness? that's not good!

how long are band practices? i really would like to do it but am afraid that i won't have time -.-

my schedule for this fall (so far, i can still drop/add...)

organic chem
principles of econ
discrete math 21-127
calculus 21-122
intro. programming
freshman IC
computing skills workshop

think that's all right for me to juggle band practice + school? i also have work study so i have to keep that into consideration.

You'll be fine. I think the bad probably practices 2-3 hours a week.

Edit: band, not bad
