Concert Band

I emailed the band director over the summer about auditions, but it didn't go through bc his e-mailed changed. I just realized now that's why i never got a response. Now, it's been 2 weeks into first semester. Idk if I should join this semester, but I love music. I was in band in school and did Marching Band my whole high school. Is 2 weeks into the semester too late to contact the band director about auditions? I'd also need time to practice, bc I didn't play my instrument that much over the summer. I also get REALLY nervous for auditions. This is my main problem. People in High school said I was really good, but idk if I'll make it. Should I contact the band director about auditions? Thanks! Btw, I go to a community college.

Why wouldn’t you contact the band director about auditions? The worst thing he could say is that it’s too late to audition, in which case you would be in the exact same situation you are in now. Alternatively, he could let you know the process for joining, suggest alternatives that don’t have auditions or other music options that are happening later on, tell you when you could join next semester, etc. If you explain your situation, he may even make an exception. Or you could find out when the next time to join would be and spend the time in between practicing.

Why wouldn’t you ask? If it’s too late to join this semester, you can always get the info for the next time you can join and then you should have plenty of time to prepare.

If you want to be in band, get in contact, explain the situation, and ask. The worst that could happen is the director saying no.

I e-mailed him awhile ago and he said I could still audition. It seems like an advanced ensemble. I don’t want the band director to think I suck.

It seems I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking if you should ask if you can still audition so late into the semester, since you had the wrong email for the band director initially and he didn’t get your email.

Do you know what the audition is like or the time of the audition? How much time would you have to prepare? Do you need to prepare your own audition piece or will you be sight reading material? What is the size of the ensemble (i.e. how many students are accepted)? It is possible that it is not as advanced as you may think or that there is a lower ensemble that you would be allowed to join.

If you really want to join, I would recommend that you just audition. Practice however much time you can, but just give it a go. You might get in, but if you don’t, nothing as really changed. You can always practice some more, and audition again next time. I doubt the bad director will hold any sort of grudge against you. If anything, you can impress him by how much you have improved when you audition next time.

I don’t know what time it is, but I know you probably have to play major scales which I would need time to learn. If I want to audition, he’ll tell me what I’m goin to play and the times. Idk if there is a limit on the number of students accepted. It’s smaller than my high school ensemble. It seems advance bc the descriptions said consists of professionals, teachers, faculties, and students and it also said “advance audition” required before joining. There is a lower ensemble but it is not active every semester. I have this condition where I have bad anxiety. I tend to think worse case scenarios. Like I’m so nervous and I can’t breathe and blow and mess up a lot or squeak.
