OH NOO ... I'm SCREWED

I just found out that All-state orchestra audition is on the same date as the december SAT test. I hsould I do? I need to take the SAT the second time. (i'm taking SAT2 in Nov) But I also need to make All-state, I finally made it last year and I expect to get a pretty good chair this year........Should I explain to colleges?

try taking october standby

well, get your priorities straight. is it more important for you to raise your SAT score or to make the orchestra? i know it's a hard decision but there's nothing to really "explain" because colleges will just tell you that you had a choice.

well, i thoguht EC is considered a pretty important part of the application. And All-state orchestra is the highest level a high school musician can reach. I made it last year. If i don't try out, won't colleges think that i'm slacking off?

i'm also taking it in JAN, but its too late for most colleges

OR... I might just have to take the ACT.....

Can't you move your audition to an earlier/different date?

no, its All-state, everyone in the state auditions on the same day

Is it in the morning? Can you ask to schedule it in the afternoon? If you're only taking 1 SAT II then perhaps take that in December and the SAT in November so that you can finish your tests ASAP and go to your audition. You should be out by 9 AM.

check the times for the audition ansd the SAT, maybe you can squeeze them both in, is the audition all day? but also definitely take the ACT.

That was very cruel. Do you have contact info for the all-state coordinators? I would definitely give them a call and politely inform them of the scheduling conflict. Maybe mention that you made it last year and are looking forward to auditioning and having a great experience againt this year, and that many other students may be in the same boat.

It seems rather stupid of them; I doubt they did it intentionally, so it's more likely they just didn't realize. Perhaps they can set up something special for you and other SAT people, even if you have to do it on a earlier date or later that same day.

I definitely urge you to give them a call because you shouldn't have to "choose" until you've done what you can.

Yea, we have a similar conflict with a band concert festival, and our director moved it because of SATs. Granted, All-State is a much bigger deal, but I think that they should understand that the SATs are kind of a big deal. If they don't move it, then I would suggest switching SAT II's with SAT I or maybe just taking the ACT.

Good luck!

Actually these conflicts happen more often than you think, there just are not enough weekends in the month for everything going on.
If they move it up a week it would be during Thanksgiving, and if you move it back it is the weekend of the ACT. Either way someone else will be inconvenienced.
