I have this MAJOR question. So yesterday I got CONDITIONALLY ACCEPTED to Syracuse University. They said that I have to state that I’m able to pay the tuition through a bank statement showcasing that my family has at least $70k for the 2017-2018 academic year. I’m a financial aid applicant, so I am unable to provide them with the bank statement WITH THAT EXACT AMOUNT. If I don’t send them the letter fast enough other students might take my place at the Engineering School. I’ve tried before to explain my situation to the financial aid office through email but they don’t seem to get it lol. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Should I tell them my parents don’t have $70k in cash, yet I believe the bank could acknowledge some assets that would add to that amount and wait to see how much aid they grant me? Or should I directly mention the amount my parents would be able to contribute per year (even if I’m discouraging the Financial Aid Office to review my case)?
@helloitsmelol i think you are doomed, they see you as a dollar sign $$$ and not as an applicant. I would not go to a university that treats me like that but that’s your decision to make. Now for the Bank statement i dont think that there is something you can do, try to convince them. Good luck man
Conditional acceptance pending proof of financial support is usually a requirement for international students. If you are not an international student, you should make sure the admissions and financial aid offices are aware of that. If you are an international student it is required for the I-20 form.
@RigasK. @Meismom As an international applicant, who would never be able to pay 70k a year, I have decided to let Syracuse go. The financial aid process is something that has to be done every year, and I don’t want to have any problems with the Financial Aid Office, or even worse - I do not want to be denied aid in the upcoming years bc it would result in a transfer. I want to attend to a university which supports me and my education in spite of my financial situation. Thank you so much for y’alls help.
@helloitsmelol syracuse says on it’s website it doesn’t provide aid to internationals. I’m pretty sure it’s there, you should have read that before applying and saying it’s a fault on their behalf.
@caasse hey I’m not saying it’s a fault on their behalf, I’m just pretty let down about how their system works. Maybe I got it wrong because last year Syracuse did not “conditionally accepted” students. I know this because a friend of mine needed 10k. She got accepted with a scholarship of 15k, and then was asked to send her bank information. Everything worked out for her, and I was hoping to find myself in a similar situation. It didn’t happen, and that’s ok. I have my eyes on other universities… no biggie.
@helloitsmelol -Perhaps the difference is that your friend received a “merit” scholarship. There is a difference between merit aid and financial aid grants. I believe that Syracuse does not offer financial aid to international students.
