I'm currently a sophomore taking 2 AP's and 2 honors, and I have 7 classes total. Last semester I had two A-'s, but the rest were A's. Next year I'm taking 3 AP's and 1 honors, but I'm thinking of taking a free period next year in lieu of my elective so I will only have 6 classes. Is that a bad idea? I'm already beat out from this year, but colleges care the most about junior year. My counselor told me to take a free period next year because I already have 3 AP's and 1 honors so colleges would look at the rigor of my classes, rather than the amount I take. I've talked to some other people, though, and they advise me to not take a free period. Any thoughts?

IF you are looking to apply to highly competitive universities, take the most rigorous courses offered at your school. If this allows for a free period, then by all means, take the free period. You will need it.
