So, according to my FA break down, I qualify for roughly $2000 in Federal Work Study money, however, I'm a bit confused about which jobs this applies to.

Does this only apply to on campus jobs? or jobs specifically at Cornell?

Or, can non-Cornell jobs apply also?

Currently, I work at Best Buy Mobile, and I make good money for being an 18 year old. I talked to my GM yesterday, and he's looking into places in Ithaca that I could transfer to. I love my job, and I would really like to keep it until I get opportunities to get paid for doing research or working in a lab or if some other sort of opportunity comes up in which case I'd be better off not keeping my job. So I'm just wondering if I can still take advantage of FWS at an off-campus job.

Also, I'm a bit confused about how FWS works exactly.

Is it that I can only work until I've made the $2000 dollars at the fixed hourly wage of the job?

Or, is it that I can work as much as I want / am able, and have only $2000 of how much I make being subsidized by the federal government?

And on a final note. Not working is NOT an option. My parents aren't contributing anything towards post-secondary education except for my initial set of winter clothes and (maybe) a new computer.. so it's basically FA and I for the road ahead.

for the most part (rare exceptions) all jobs that fall under FWS will be on campus at cornell…

not all jobs at cornell will be FWS eligible. some require it though.

the 2k dollars in FWS means that if you do land a FWS-eligible job your employer pays half your wage while the FWS money pays the other half.

depending on the job, you’ll still be making AT LEAST minimum wage.

the FWS is only an incentive for your employer to hire you. an employer at cornell will prefer a student with FWS money because if he’s willing to pay $8/hr to a worker he really only has to pay you $4 because $4 will come from that 2k FWS money.

so an employer who has to choose between a student who has FWS will probably pick you instead of a student without FWS.

note - depending on your financial aid package. you may be eligible to get your FWS money turned into more loan money (if you aren’t maxed out for loans yet). talk to a financial aid counselor as soon as you’re on campus.

Well, I don’t have any loans… Does that make me eligible? lol

Also, thanks for all the info. =]

not sure if anything’s changed with loans…but if you’d rather focus on school and not a job you can hopefully take that 2k work study money and turn it into a loan.

nicer having 1k/semester up front than working and making less than that all semester.

some work study jobs are only like 10hrs/week :(
