Because everyone told me to do so, I went off and got my Dad to fill out the FAFSA. However, from what he's read (and from what I've read, officially speaking), it seems like the FAFSA is for need-based aid, and, even though it doesn't seem like it, my Dad is stoutly convinced that we will not qualify for any of that need-based aid.

Accordingly, I'm targeting my efforts to schools that offer merit based aid. I am under the impression that every school has different policies regarding finaid; for example, Rutgers, from whom I have heard back from, has given me a quite generous financial aid package... before I even submitted the FAFSA!

So right now, I'm gearing up to finish my CollegeBoard Financial Aid Profile and the FAFSA.... but I am utterly confused with regards to this process. Here's where you come in: back when "How many SAT IIs do I need" was something that mattered me, I went the road of the common denominator and answered the question with a number that would apply to the most schools... three. I'd like to do the same here: do all of the steps required by most schools, and then tidy each one up individually. If the case is that I don't need FAFSA for merit scholarships, please say so! If the case is that I can't do this, and I really ought to research each school, please say so! As I said before, I have no clue what I'm doing. Thank you!

First of all, submit the FAFSA. It's relatively painless & it's free. Some merit scholarships require that the FAFSA be filled out. I know, it doesn't make sense ... but that's how some schools do it. So you'll have your bases covered by filing it.

CSS Profile is another matter, because you have to pay for it. Look at the websites for your individual schools to see if they require the Profile for merit aid. Call the school, if you have to.

If you want to take out an unsubsidized Stafford loan next year, you'll need the FAFSA on file (even though you can borrow $3500 without financial need, you still have to fill out the FAFSA).

Thank you kelsmom! I've already filled it out, but I haven't submitted it, since I haven't decided which schools I want to send it to.

I noticed the CSS Profile was paid too (that's mostly why I came here to ask; otherwise I would have just done everything to be safe.) However, it looks like UChicago needs the Profile. Rice University, on the other hand, I'm not so sure... guess that means a phone call (or a question in that forum...)

As of last year, U Chicago did require the Profile for need-based aid, but I don't think they required it for merit aid. We filed a preliminary Profile at early action time; the estimated award was zero. I called them and asked if there was any point in filing the formal, up to date, form and was told "no". Son was awarded a merit award nonetheless.

It is always best to call and ask, though. Policies change, etc.
