Confused about GECs

I’m in Fisher Honors and I plan on double majoring in finance and accounting and was thinking about minoring in political science.

I thought GECs were kinda just a freshman thing but then looking at this (second page with curriculum guide)

Accounting - The Ohio State University

looks like it is otherwise. I don’t like science but it looks like I have to take a science class every year…why??? haha (or I could stack up early I guess and try to get them out of the way)

Not too much room for electives, and I thought I would only have to take 1 “rocks for jocks” type science class, but now I’ve got to take four apparently.

I’ll be coming in with some AP and CC classes though

US History- 5 on AP exam
English Language and Composition- 3 on AP exam
Statistics introduction course through local CC

those are set in stone and completed already.
The rest are pending and I’ll find out my AP scores in about a month

English Literature and Comp - expecting a 4+
Calculus AB - should have gotten at least a 3
US Govt - 4 range, hopefully a 5
Comparative Government - 3-4, maybe a 5
Physics - haha 1 for sure, not getting credit

So I have credit for USH, Eng Lang and Stats, and I am expecting credit Eng Lit, Calc AB, Government and Comparative Govt. No science credit.

So I guess it looks like I can get out of most of my GECs except for science? And I think I’ll have to take another Calc class since I only did AB in high school.

Was thinking about taking one more class over the summer at a local CC, either intro Psych or intro Sociology. But it looks like I will have gotten ride of most of my GEC requirements other than science so this might be kind of a waste. But I’m thinking about getting my CPA and you need 150 semester hours/225 qtr hours to sit for the exam, so every bit helps.

Another CC has science classes (the one near me, all of them got cancelled, except for like Chem…no thanks!)

Another one that is semi close has class and it looks like they are online too but they started already, the week of June 6. I’m going to call and see if I would still be allowed to take them. They didn’t list time or day slots so I’m not sure how hard it would be to get myself caught up to speed since it is taught online.

Thank you, post kinda went everywhere.

Well, I found a science class that shouldn’t be too bad, transfers to OSU, and isn’t that far away.

1 science gen ed down, haha

Try looking on uselect.com to see what will transfer. If you don’t like science, I would take them summers at community college or take them this upcoming year under quarters because after OSU switches to semesters (starting summer 2012), classes will be longer. However under semesters, you may be required to take fewer classes. You may want to call the business college to get info about the quarter to semseter conversion and how it will affect GECs.

Thanks for the reply.

I called the business school advisers the other day and they were sort of helpful (I don’t think I talked to an adviser it was a student) and he told me about that website. I found a class that would transfer and I’m taking a intro to human Bio class at my local CC.

I thought about the switch to semesters too. Hmmmm, apparently Bio 101 is a fairly easy, do the work get the grade, type of class (my bio class at the CC transfers as Bio 102).

I’ll have to call and ask.

thanks

I’m a rising junior in Finance at Fisher, in honors as well, so hopefully this will help-- at orientation you will probably get a sheet that tells you what AP scores will be counted as credit. On your transcript, AP U.S. Gov becomes Poly Sci 101, AP U.S. History becomes History 151, AP English Lit becomes English 110.02, etc. You will place out of several GECs with this credit, and your stats class will probably count for the required stats 133, however- this is the list of everything you will need to take (until it is revised for semesters):

http://fisher.osu.edu/supplements/10/7521/GenericSpecializations_GEC.pdf</a>

So it looks like you will still need 4 sciences, several social sciences, including macro and micro econ, a visual and performing arts class, CSE 200 (which is excel and access programming), a second writing course, and something that counts as a diversity credit.

These probably should be taken throughout your 4 years in college, because some of them are going to be easier, and it will be nice to have an easier GEC to take at the same time as harder or more time-consuming classes in your major(s).

As you already know, things will change somewhat with the conversion, but from what my academic adviser said a few weeks ago, things are set in stone yet, and the proposed changes to the business GECs may not be available for a little while longer.

Also, you may want to look into the MAC program, which allows you to get your masters in accounting your senior year.

Thanks ambiguity, that was really helpful.

Since you are a junior do you know what kind of jobs you are going to aim for next year?

The four year undergraduate/Macc program sounds really cool. Do you know if they would charge undergraduate or graduate tuition rates my senior year? Do you think it would give me a leg up with an advisory/consulting position with a Big 4 company? I would assume so but I’m not sure.

Not really sure which path I want to go down, finance or accounting, although apparently they are fairly interconnected and I’ve heard accounting is a huge help later on in business. I’d especially like to get my CPA(kinda the point of the MAcc haha), that would be killer.

Finance does sound a lot more interesting but apparently after a few years of accounting and with a CPA I’d be able to branch over into finance. The end goal for me is a top MBA program, and I have heard that CPA + MBA can be a really good combo.

Apparently the 4 yr bachelors/MAcc program is through the Honor Accounting Cohort. I know that OSU just recently launched a Masters in Finance, do you know if there will be any accelerated programs to get your MFIN + bachelors in four years?

ehhh not sure what path I am leaning towards. Would still really like to aim for Fisher Futures and see how I would fare in Investment Banking but getting my CPA is also very appealing.

Thanks, that was really helpful.

Finance and accounting are fairly interconnected, in that finance students take both the two intro to accounting classes all business students take, plus two additional intermediate accounting classes. A greater understanding of accounting is necessary for a well-rounded education in finance.

I don’t know if Fisher is planning a program similar to MAcc for finance majors, but I believe that MAcc is probably going to remain a unique offering. I believe you would still be paying undergraduate tuition, but I’m not certain, nor am I in the program. I looked into it briefly, but I currently have no desire to be an accountant, and the program requires a very heavy course load.

As far as what I want job-wise, I will be looking for a second internship, preferably doing something interesting in my field. I’m not yet set on what I’d like to do either, so for now I’m aiming to gain some experience.
