GE Question

Ok, so I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I got the letter in the mail about what APs get me out of which classes, and going over the GE requirements for Eleanor Roosevelt College, I've found some weird things.

For ERC, the GE requirements, as I understand, are:
6 quarters MMW
2 quarters quantatative/formal skills (math)
2 quarters natural sciences
x quarters foreign language
2 quarters fine arts
3 quarters regional specialization
upper division writing

= 13 + x => maximum of 17

Considering that I'm not really sure what the foreign language requirement, I put what the maximum was.

For my personal circumstance, I've taken and passed AP Bio, AP US History, and AP Language with 4s and above, and am taking AP Chem, AP Calculus AB, and AP European History.

AP Bio fulfills the science requirement, so minus 2 quarters, AP Euro should fulfull 2 upper division courses for regional specialization, so minus 2 quarters, and AB should fulfill one quantatative course, minus 1 quarter.

So that would leave me with 17 - 7 = 10 quarters of class to take over my first two years?

I'm not really sure how this works, but would I be taking upper division classes in my second year, because I know i'd need to take more than a class a quarter...?

I also don't particularly understand what my foreign language requirement would be, I took two years of Spanish, but did not take AP, and probably would not pass a test, so how many classes would I need to take?

Thanks for all replies

“I’m not really sure how this works, but would I be taking upper division classes in my second year, because I know i’d need to take more than a class a quarter…?”

-Yes, if you are done with your GEs then you start taking either lower divs for your major (if it requires any) and/or upper divisions. Plenty of sophomores take upper divs, it is normal.

“I also don’t particularly understand what my foreign language requirement would be, I took two years of Spanish, but did not take AP, and probably would not pass a test, so how many classes would I need to take?”

-ERC requires the equivalent of a fourth quarter of language. In your situation, you would probably start by taking the online placement test - before you register in August. It will place you in one of four possible levels. I got placed into the fourth level, so I only had to take one quarter of language. Does that make more sense?

Oh, ok, that makes alot more sense.

Also, I would really have to choose a major by the time I got to my second year, because I would probably finish my GEs before then?

And, if I want to switch majors from an impacted major (Bio) to another major, is that difficult? Because I know it would affect what GEs I take.

You officially have to choose a major by the time you reach junior standing (90 units) but yeah if you’re done with GEs then I’d pick a major quick haha.

Switching FROM an impacted major TO a regular major is simple. It takes like 30 seconds, you do it online.

What about from one impacted major to another impacted major?

@konakai27: That’s easy as well. It’s only switching to an impacted major from an undecided/non-impacted major that is difficult.
