confused about summer financial aid

i'm taking my last pre req (it was not required for admission btw, just getting it out of the way) at my community college this summer. they offered me financial aid which was a fee waiver and a grant. I'm worried if I accept these financial aid awards then I will disqualify for financial aid at my UC of attendance this fall. I called a financial aid officer at UC Davis and she said that it was okay if I receive financial aid this summer because it would count under the 2011-2012 school year and this fall will be the 2012-2013 school year. Is that correct? My friend said that she was totally wrong, but i'm confused, Idk who is right.

thanks

so…your financial aid counselor told you yes, your friend told you no.

hmmm, toughie.

I’m going to have to agree with kitty on this one. I think the UC rep is a bit more qualified than your friend. If you’re still worried call them up and ask a different person.

I’m pretty sure your counselor is right. But if you really want to make sure, just call Davis’ financial aid office an see what they say.

The financial aid officer is right. Summer 2012 counts under the 2011-2012 school year. I applied for the summer transfer program at UCI and was told to edit my 2011-2012 FAFSA to include Irvine under my list of schools.

This summer falls under 2011/2012 (last semester in the cycle). Fall 2012 semester is the first semester in the new academic year cycle and falls under 2012/2013. Take the aid dude, you are fine. Supplimental Summer Pell grants were cancelled this year though. Duh!

well summer awards are always listed first on my community college’s financial aid page so I couldn’t tell which year it was for.

@northbeach is an SEOG grant the same as a supplemental grant? last summer I got an email saying i was awarded an SEOG grant but it wasn’t included in my financial aid package or anything. it just showed up out of no where so I was expecting the same thing for this year.

uchappytrain:
the schools have control over who gets the SEOG grants. they are supposed to be awarded “first come first serve” but some schools are corrupt and dole them out to the students they like the best. anyway, SEOG grants are limited. while Pell grants are not. but congress cancelled the supplemental summer Pell grants this year, why? because they suck. UC schools can award loans for summer, i am getting a summer loan at UCB and the school is paying all my tuition. not sure what UCLA is offering for summer aid. but whatever it is it does not count against this coming year starting Fall 2012. good luck.

@northbeach
So we will not be receiving FA for the summer? Crap, I needed that money :</p>

okay cool I hope I get the SEOG grant again this year. last year they gave me 1,400. and I’ve never even heard of summer pell grants, thats weird.

Same ):

Last summer, we received supplimental pell grants, depending on how many units you were taking. You needed at least 6 units to qualify.
6 units ~ half what you got in 1 semester
9 units ~ 3/4
12 units ~ full semesters worth of pell grant

At least this is what I remember. I took 10 units last summer so i got 3/4 of what I usually get in one semester. (Fall or spring, not both)

@northbeach where did you hear this from? If this is true, I guess I wont be taking any summer classes lol

well, i received full summer tuition and a subsidized loan that replaces the Pell grant that the EVIL (sucky gross varmint) congress took away. personally i am thrilled because i thought i would not get to attend summer school at all. but UCB has been great and found the money for me to attend. you guys will probably get the tuition covered and the option to take a loan.

rDPurplehaze: read it and weep.

“a recent vote in Congress has reformed the Pell Grant program once again, stripping away a student’s ability to get two awards during the 2011-12 school year.”

And let me ask you this: Where was the Executive Branch Veto? With the pledge to save education? no where dudes. keep that in mind when you are voting in the next election.

if you did not take ANY pell grant money for last fall and this spring, then you can get it this summer. but that is bogus because everyone who is eligible for it in the spring and fall took it, right? haha. such a scam. prior to this recent vote we could take two Peel grants per year. now we can only take ONE.

UChappytrain
that is amazing, i have never heard of anyone receiving 1400 in SEOG money. great! are you sure that was not PELL money? of course you would know, but i didn’t know SEOG went that high. your school must love you. was that at UCB? UCB is giving me 400 dollars in SEOG money next year, and that is pretty average for SEOG as far as i know. and it cannot be used in the summer.

The answer to your question is it totally depends on the community college. I have two community colleges near me that I’ve attended, one counts summer school at the END of the school year (eg. 2011-2012 is Fall 2011, Spring 2012, Summer 2012), and the other counts summer at the BEGINNING of the school year (eg. 2012-2013 is Summer 2012, Fall 2012, Spring 2013). You definitely need to talk to your community college to see which year it falls under to make sure you’re not using up aid for next year.

@ancient gammoner
that is pretty nutty. i cannot see how schools can get away with that frankly, because Pell grants are federal and this is a federal regulation about grants. sounds like some CCC schools are really off the charts on this one. anyway, in my opinion it does not matter what those schools think, it matters how Cal regulates it. we are attending Cal summer school. and Cal uses the standard academic calendar. Summer rates as 2011/2012 and thus you must list Cal on last year’s Fafsa to qualify for aid at Cal this summer. the Pell component will count toward Pell grants 2011/2012 and makes no difference if some wacky CCC has other ideas about it. haha. we are in Cal now. cheers.

@ ancientgammoner thanks for actually answering my question I just called my community college and they told me that this summer is actually for 2012-2013 year so you just saved my life. Thanks a looooot. I guess I’m not going to summer school

@northbeach I just cheacked and yeah 400 of that money was a pell grant, put the other 1000 was the seog grant seee:

On 07/13/11 at 07:30 your deposit from
PELL GRANT was posted in the amount of $ 419.00.
Your balance after deposit is $ 419.00

On 07/13/11 at 07:30 your deposit from
SEOG GRANT was posted in the amount of $ 1000.00.
Your balance after deposit is $ 1,419.00

I’m on the phone with UC davis and they’re telling me that as long as the semesters don’t overlap each other I should be fine. Can anyone confirm this?

So they’re basically saying I can receive financial aid from two institutions in the same year just not at the same time? I should be fine right?

nevermind I made them double check and they said that if I accept any federal aid it will be deducted from my UC davis financial aid, like my loan and my pell grant. So I just dropped my summer classes :(

take your summer classes at UC Davis. and you will be fine dude. but you need to list davis on the 2011/2012 fafsa.
