Confused English Major :(

Okay, so my main goal is to get into UCLA and/or Berkeley. Right now I'm at De Anza fulfilling all the pre-reqs I need for LA and Berkeley.

However, I'm also gonna start going to Foothill in the fall in order to TAP over there for UCLA. So I was looking at the pre-reqs for Berkeley and LA for the heck of it, and there's additional ones for Berkeley.

Would Berkeley hold it against me if I didn't complete the extra prereqs at Foothill? Even though De Anza is like my main school?

The extra requirements are that I take American and Brit. Lit at Foothill to satisfy the English Lit. survey at Berkeley. For De Anza they only recognize the Brit. Lit half of it.

I hope that made sense...

no they wont

i called berkeley admissions because i am kinda doing the same thing~

i’m a psychology major and at my ccc they don’t offer any of the biology pre-reqs, so im going to another ccc to fulfill them. if they dont offer them at your main ccc then it wont be counted against you but they recommend that you do take them because you will have to complete them regardless!

hope it helps! (:

I got rejected from Berkeley for not finishing their pre-reqs. I know EXACTLY which classes you’re talking about :stuck_out_tongue: I didn’t take them because 1) my dream school is UCLA, 2) I was taking extra honors courses to fulfill TAP and didn’t have time to worry about Cal’s requirements.

Also, it’s difficult to say which is your “main school”, because first of all, UCB and UCLA don’t like students that jump from one CC to another (unless it is critically necessary and explained in the app).

If you can’t fulfill BOTH La and B’s requirements, you’re going to be paranoid for the rest of the year. You should choose which one you want to go to and focus on that. If you want UCLA, I highly recommend you do TAP. If Cal, finish all their requirements.

Also, it’s difficult to say which is your “main school”, because first of all, UCB and UCLA don’t like students that jump from one CC to another (unless it is critically necessary and explained in the app).

How do you know this and if it is true, why?

^^pskate-I have to disagree with one thing, the jumping around to different colleges comment. I attended 4 CCCs over the course of 10 years. I got into both schools and I know a few others that have done the same. As long as your GPA remains high, you finish ALL of your pre-reqs and are a strong candidate overall, they won’t hold it against you.

Also, to answer the OP’s question, do whatever you can to complete all the pre-reqs for both schools. If I am understanding your post correctly, it sounds like it’s only one extra class, correct? It may be hard, it may take more time and energy, but it WILL make you a stronger candidate. Options are always good and the last thing you want to do is put all your eggs in one basket.

i attended 4 different schools and i got into UCSD, UCLA, UCB, and USC Marshall so i dont think they hold it against you at all.

I should edit that. I meant UCLA (not UCLA and UCB).

The UCLA’s TAP counselor told me about the 2 CC situation.
Why?

 1. Throughout the entire TAP orientation, the UCLA-TAP counselors made sure none of us were attending 2 CC’s simultaneously. UCLA specifically tells each CC’s TAP counselor that they must let students know attending 2 CC’s is not allowed.

2) When I first signed up for TAP, the TAP rep told me I must drop all the classes I enrolled in at the other CC.

3) My transfer counselor stopped in the middle of counting my units and said - “Wait. You’re not going to 2 different colleges right now are you??!?!” I said no, and shes said “Ok good. So you know.”

Though we are digressing a bit from the OP’s initial post, I must comment on how ridiculous it is for the UCLA TAP counselors to prohibit students from attending two community colleges. And if that weren’t absurd enough, your specific TAP rep told you must drop all the classes enrolled at another community college. I can hardly think of any legitimate reasons for your sources to have been so adamant about students simultaneously attending two or more CCs. Either you are completely misunderstanding what they meant, or UCLA TAP is pretty wack; I hope it is the aforementioned.

I agree flower. I had to repeat a course at Cypress College in the Fall while I took a full load at my primary CCC, Cerritos. I was not a TAP student and still got into UCLA (and Cal). I think that TAP is a great way to add bonus points to one’s application, but it really seems like it may not be necessary as long as they have a high GPA and the completed pre-reqs. I wouldn’t like being restricted in that way, but that’s just me. IDK.

Shoot an email to the UCLA rep at your CC, it might be different but the rules are similar throughout. TAP is just a very strict program. The two MAIN rules are: 1) Only attend the school that you will earn your TAP certification, and 2) It’s required to attend that CC for one full year.

I must warn you, my information is definitely limited to Foothill College AND TAP.

Okay, then I’m thinking your info ONLY applies to Foothill. I divided my classes up between two different CCs and got into UCLA with TAP just fine. Every counselor I met with at either school knew that I was attending the other and that I was fulfilling my TAP, and I never even mentioned a reason on my app. I think the general rule is that the five honors classes you take in order to complete TAP must come from one CC, since only one school is going to fill out that TAP transfer formy thingy in February.
