Congrats on your acceptances guys!
For those of you waiting on Berkeley... are you taking any pre-requisites JUST for UCB? But already got accepted to a 1st/2nd choice UC?

In my case - (English major) I was accepted to UCLA (my 1st choice) and currently taking 3 English classes total:
*2 are required by BOTH UCLA & UCB
*1 is ONLY required by UCB

**If I don't get into UCB, there is NO point in me continuing with the class/B... So can I drop it?????????

What I'm wondering is.... Will UCLA give me the stink eye for dropping an ENGLISH class, even though it's not related to my IGETC or UCLA pre-reqs? I'm sure they know it's required for UCB, quite possibly see me as a lazy ass... But can they formally rescind me for dropping a class unrelated to my UCLA requirements? Or does the class just count as an elective to UCLA?

p.s.
-my provisional contract is very lenient (C's or better)
-I'm taking 19 units and working 30 hrs/wk (not eligible for FAFSA so gotta save up!)
-I would prefer to drop the unnecessary class before the deadline so no grade shows up. It's a tight schedule though... Only 1 day to decide UCB or UCLA!!!!!!
**April 30 - UCB decisions
May 1 - Last day to drop classes without a grade/B

Advice please! There has to be tons of CCers with this dilemma...

If you do not get in Berkeley tmr (which I hope you get in anw) give UCLA a call, explain your situation (units + working hours) and ask them what you should do. I think they’re not gonna be hard on you since you’ve already been admitted. But keep in mind that you still need 60+ units to be eligible for transferring, so make sure you have enough after dropping that class.

I really don’t think you should drop that class. You made the commitment to do it, so see it through. You never know, you may get accepted to UCB and they may offer you an amazing financial aid package. You may change your mind. It’s ALWAYS good to have options. Many of the people I know that have already transferred changed their mind at the last minute.

Heh, I’m taking an extra 20 units just for Berkeley.

But even though UCLA is your first choice, you should finish that class. Lots of people are in similar situations, so it’s nothing really out of the ordinary…

yeah. i’m also an english major. i assume you’re talking about that course in Shakespeare that ucb wants you to do before transferring. i didn’t want to take the class either because of a full schedule but i did anyways last semester. i got ucla’s pre-reqs done a year ago.

my advice: just suck it in, close your eyes, heedlessly run towards the mountain of work and pray you come out the other end intact.

like game_theory said, your situation isn’t really unusual. i think you’ll be fine. :)

kcsunshine - the drop date for my CC is the day AFTER UCB decisions are out. So what I’m wondering is, can I drop the class if I DON’T get into UCB.

It’s just that I’m taking 5 classes… This class already had 1 essay and midterm coming up in a week. I just don’t want to screw up my other English classes just because I had to take this one for no reason…

bootsinsane - OMG I didn’t realize my Shakespeare class is a UCB requirement only too!!! Damn it, I’m taking 2 extra classes for UCB, not just 1… (Am Lit & Shakespeare)

For UCLA, I only need to take 1 English class & 1 GE… That would make my life so much easier!!!

Pskate-if you don’t get into UCB, make SURE that you call UCLA and speak to someone very reputable before you decide to drop it. Since you only have 1 day, you will have to get on the phone ASAP. The last thing you want to do is drop it and have it come back to bite you in the a$$. I would just double (even triple) check it with UCLA first.
