hi, i received my aid package from NYU consists of 26,000 in grants and scholarships and the remaining is filled with loans, does this mean that NYU has met 100% of my need , because the outside scholarships which i am thinking of applying to only give money to those with needs that aren't met. More importantly i am not willing to take out any loans, im leaning on these outside scholarships. ------------i need help.

Your financial aid package absolutely CAN (and usually DOES) include loans. In addition, NYU does not guarantee to meet full 100% of need.

COA (cost of attendance, a figure that the school determines) - EFC (expected family contribution, again a figure that the school determines)= demonstrated need. As long as that demonstrated need has been met, even if it is with loans or work-study, then your need has been met.

Most schools have loans as part of the FA package. One thing you could do is ask NYU to refigure your FA package with no loans -- then you would have a gap. The only issue would be whether you could rerequest any of those loans if you don't get a scholarship to cover the amount.

It is certainly understandable that you don't want to take out loans -- noone does, however you are being unrealistic if you are unwilling to take out any loans. Are you planning on doing work-study and earning money during the summer to contribute to the cost of your education? otherwise you are saying that you are unwilling to pay any part of the cost of your college -- and you expect others to pay your way.

As long as you keep your loan amount low (less than $20,000 total at the end of your undergraduate degree), you should be fine. Of course, the less, the better.

thanks for your time, but what will happen if i would want to receive these scholarships to repay the loan, how can i show that there is an imbalance in what i can pay and what i can borrow
