Confused regarding student with acceptance at Yale, Harvard and Cornell

Hey guys, I was just reading an article in my local paper today regarding a student that has been accepted this year to Yale, Harvard and Cornell (as well as Hopkins and Georgia Tech). My question is, if both Yale and Harvard are SCEA and Cornell is ED, how would she know already that she has acceptances if Ivys aren’t releasing RD results until 6 April? Did she not follow the guidelines and apply early to all 3 IVYs? What are the potential ramifications to doing that?

Who knows. We had one that said a girl got accepted to 80+ colleges with 2.1 million in scholarships.

Ahh… I’m new to all of this… wasn’t aware of likely letters. I’ll have to do some research on those

I did not know anything either until my daughter told me about them. I don’t remember them being around 30 years ago! One of her classmates got one from an Ivy.

Is the student a really exceptional (recruitment-level) athlete? If so, then the student may indeed have received likely letters from multiple Ivy League schools. If not, I’d be a bit skeptical. Also, note that likely letters are not official acceptances, and while they indicate an extremely high probability of admission, the student was IMO premature in publicly claiming to have been admitted (if he/she/they did so on the basis of a likely letter).

No Ivy League coach will waste their Likely Letters on a recruit that does not apply ED/REA

You’re right, excellent point.

Given that, my guess is that the student described in the original post is simply lying. I’m sure that’s not a rare event in some circles, though it’s a bit odd and foolish to be making that sort of claim in print.
