I've read a couple of times about people getting a small packet and big packet when they got accepted. What is this all about? I only got one relatively small package with 3 copies of the acceptance letter. Whats the big one all about? Is it anything important? Should i let them knw i havent got it?

also, have any of u other international students applied for (or got) ur CAQ or Study Permit yet? i've applied for, but still havent got, my CAQ. And If you fall under option 3 in the CAQ Application, does that mean u can apply for the permit at the embassy before u get the CAQ?

lastly, I got this booklet regarding figuring out my fees at McGill (based on residency...etc) It said I need to fill out this Permanent Code Data Form if the names of my parents do not appear on my birth certificate. But they've never asked me for my birth certificate. Have any of you been asked for it?!

i got a big one that includes the 2006-7 undergraduate programs and "the essential guide for new students." but i'm from ontario, so maybe they didn't send international kids the same thing. i also received the legal stuff, and i faxed in my birth certificate and personal data form because its due soon.

Apply for the CAQ ASAP! It can take up to two months to process, and with the slow mail system between Canada/US it can be a nightmare... it was for me.

Once you have your CAQ and you have time, get the study permit at the Canadian embassy or consulate in your area... if you do it when you go through the border you'll be waiting for quite a long time, unless you're lucky.

hey! i'm an international student too and i recieved a huge package. along with those three letters of acceptance i got the massive undergraduate programs book, the welcome book, and the international student book. they're all pretty important and if you haven't gotten all of them you should make sure to let mcgill know. they will probably answer a lot of your questions if you take the time to read through them. but most of the stuff is online at www.mcgill.ca/newstudents

also as for the CAQ that definitely needs to be sent away as soon as possible. as for applying to get your study permit without having gotten your caq approved yet i do believe you can send off for your permit while the CAQ is still being processed. however, they do say it is 'preferable' to have a copy of your caq when sending off for your permit. and i've seen a lot of conflicting information in this area. i don't know how you're supposed to get the caq to them once it comes but that's something i would assume they'll request for. if you're an american student you can get your study permit from a port of entry, i dont know how practical that is, but if you're from most other countries you'll have to get it from a canadian visa office in your country (there's a list of which one to apply to for each country at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/offices/missions.html )

also, what's this about a perminet code? i thought we do all that once we arrive?

combatbaby: i wasn't aware that they need my birth certificate. Do you think perhaps intl students dont need that? I'll email them.

beatlespwr: I got my acceptance letter around mid-February!! And i still havent received that big packet! I guess somethings wrong ther, I'll let them know. And no, I'm not from the US. I'm a citizen of India living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I sent my CAQ forms in the beginning of May. Still havent heard anything.

rideltrain: I sent my CAQ forms in the beginning of May. Still havent heard anything. U said, "it was for me." Does that mean, you've already got your CAQ? Wow, I must be way behind :O! Also, I hear that at the embassy they don't issue the actual Study Permit, (but instead some temporary thing) and that it is issued upon entry at a Canadian Airport. So, im guessing i dont have a choice but wait in that long line.

clutterofechoes: I got my acceptance letter in mid-Feb, but never got those other books. But, I have dowloaded, the Welcome Book and the Pre-departure Guide from their website. But i havent seen the undergraduate programs book or the international student book. I guess I'll email them for it. I tried calling the embassy here to find out whether I can apply while my CAQ is still being processed, but no one answered. I'll let you knw when i find out. and as for this permanent code, its something McGill needs to get from the Quebec Govt. and before McGill can do that, theyve asked me for some documents. I think u'll get a booklet on all that soon by post.

im a 3rd year student at mcgill, so i got mine a long time ago! but when i applied it took over two months for it to be processed... and i sent it out in june, and i didn't recieve it before heading up to mcgill... hence i was stuck at the border while the customs agents attempted to clear me (as my CAQ was approved, just never reached me before i left)... once i was cleared i was forced to go to the quebec consulate in montreal and process documents before i could even get my student ID card and move into my residence... it was a HUGE hassle! So make sure to get your CAQ asap.

you cannot get your study permit without a CAQ- unless they changed the rules, but doubtful. You can't "send away" for it either, you have to actually go in to a consulate or to customs and process the information. unless they changed things there too.

From my experience with mail to and from the middle east (i'm originally from Israel), is that it takes a while, and so expect the CAQ to take a while, but in the meantime, you can prepare your Study Permit so that way all you have to do is attach a copy of your CAQ and send it.

ah ha! i think i have finally figured out this whole caq/study permit business. we do fit under 'option 3' in the caq application as the UAE/India and England (where i live) are not listed under any of the other options (unlike America, hence the confusion) and so Quebec immigration WILL send a copy to your Canadian visa office provided you listed it on your caq application. which means us special select foreigners can send off for a study permit at the same time as the caq is being processed. that's according to the international student services pre-departure guide anyway. (which by the way, do you have? it's really useful, you can download it at http://www.mcgill.ca/internationalstudents )

just reading through it now it says 'once you have obtained your caq and study permit, you will be required to submit copies of both the caq and the study permit to the registrar's office to recieve your permanent code'. which means we probably have a while to wait, doesn't it?

and by the way, just to make your day even more fun, because of your country of residence you also have yet another visa to fill in! there's a temporary residence visa that unfortunately you may also have to look into.

great news! I got my CAQ today:D!! so that was about a month.

btw, did any one else apply for their Study Permit as a minor and had the Dean as their guardian till theyre 18? I was looking through the requirments for applying for the permit as a minor and theyve asked ask for alot of things that I'm sure I can't ask the Dean to do. Do you think those requirements are for those who have relatives, friends...etc as guardians? and that the letter my parents sent him and the letter he sent us (copies of those...originals went with the CAQ App) will do?

and clutterofechoes, you're right about the option 3 thing. on a letter attached to my CAQ, it says theyve sent a copy to the embassy here.

however, i had sent an email to the ARR office at McGill and they replied saying that we DO need to fill out the Permanent Data Code Form.

well the email just said that we DO need to send it in. But i did read in that booklet, Legal Documents that Affect you Tuition and Registration Status, that if you are a international student whose gonna stay in Canada for more than 6 months (the category i fall under) they need u to sumbit your CAQ and Permanent Code Data Form (before u arrive in McGill) and ur Study Permit (once u reach ther). They want only COPIES of your CAQ and Study Permit (they clearly say they dont want originals). U can find this info and more at http://www.mcgill.ca/student-records/documents/
