the ND site said that only 20 ppl major in chem...seriously? i dont think that accurate, what do u guys think? if it is true, is the program not popular or does it have a bad rep. cuz i got accepted as a chem major..

I started out as a chem major many years ago and there were not very many of us back then either. We had a special chem lab Freshman year for potential chem majors and it had only two sections. Remember there are only about 1500 freshmen coming in and if each major has 20 students that's only 75 majors. The College of Arts and Letters alone has 60 majors. So I expect there are more than 100 different majors at ND and thus many will have less than 20 students. Who knows, you may be in one of the most popular science programs.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Chemistry is just not as popular a major as biology or some of the other science majors. Freshman year there are more chemistry majors, but a lot of people end up dropping out of the sciences all together or going into the pre-professional program. Also, most of the majors are concentrated in the College of Arts and letters, so I'm not sure is daaaaad's calculations work for the college of science, but I wouldn't worry about the size of the chem major. The chemistry department is actually chemistry and biochemistry (which is a little more popular) and there is some overlap of the courses. Also, the resources that the college of science has now with the new Jordan Hall of Science are amazing! I definitely wouldn't worry about the program having a bad rep.
