he managed to demonstrate an elevator with a built in safety_________________ to the bottom if the rope used to raise and lower it broke .

A. device, by which the elevator would not plunge
B. device to prevent the elevator from plunging

pls explain the reason too..........

b) because it’s idiomatic?

and also irrc <<would>> is used to show past’s future.</would>

not 100% sure my reasoning is correct, any thoughts?

Actually, u r ri8. The answer is also given ‘B’ , but would u pls give me the explaination why ‘A’ is not suitable?

Why should we put an unnecessary comma when sentence makes complete sense without a comma? A comma would just twist and tangle the sentence…

A is grammatically correct but unnecessarily wordy compared with B.

Answer choice A is not any wordier than choice B, nor is adding one comma grounds to rule the option incorrect.

(Admittedly, I am not well versed in grammar jargon, nor am I an expert in any sense)…

The comma creates a big problem in the sentence. Now, I’m struggling to put this into words… But essentially, the comma necessitates that a second independent clause start. Thus, the comma also necessitates a conjunction, but there isn’t one.

I believe I see several other reasons that choice A is wrong, but, like I said, I’m no expert so I won’t make any conjectures. There is reason enough to cross out choice A based on the problem discussed in the previous paragraph.

Additionally, Choice A would also be correct if it read “device which would stop the elevator from plunging”.

Anyhow, there is nothing wrong with choice B and it should instantly jump out at you as the correct answer without getting anywhere near the nitty-gritty.

I think it’s B…The first one simply sounds awkward…
