Remember whether you apply for Fall 2014 or Fall 2015, you cannot change the Cs of class 9/10 and neither can you change the Math, Chemical and Physics score of Class 11. All you have in your control is the test scores of Class 12 beginning now, and SATs and Subject SATs. So focus on those.

Also for your information do not limit yourself to only selective colleges, spread your options to to ones with higher acceptance rate. You can apply for transfer to your dream college or more competitive college in your Sophomore and Junior year by maintaining super stellar grades in the first 2 years of college.

And one more thing the Class 11 scores, how do they compare with rest of your class. Sometimes it helps to explain them - by your Counsellor/Principal - in context of class rank and percentile if the grading has been too harsh in your school.

I cannot tell you what to do. You have to explore your options. Make a list. A mix of reach, match and safeties. So in a list of 10 colleges that you apply to, 2 should be a reach, 6 a match and 2 safeties. While it is good to be ambitious you also need to base it on facts and reality and so you have to be practical. it helps not to get emotional about the process.

Another opinion would be to explore the option of getting an undergrad here in India and save the money for a post graduate degree from US. The cost of a 4 year undergrad program is about the same as a 2 year post graduate program. And the chances of getting a job and work visa after a post grad are significantly higher.

Just an observation - The UCs do not offer any financial aid to internationals, so quite expensive. I think you should target your college search with your SAT and your ability to pay. Have you looked at purdue, rutgers, illinois - urbana/champaign , georgia tech etc. You 11th grade science is low. I would really take the science SAT subject tests. The other thing…you can take a year off and prepare as well if your subject scores don’t work out. You will need to show competence in the subjects since your grades are a bit ‘iffy’. (Engineering at UCs are very competitve)

Seriously you want to go out of the country to study, you need to sit down and do some research on your own. If you had simply googled the word “Rutgers” the first hit you would get is this,

Sorry but I have to be blunt. You need to start preparing for college and the good way to start is read, research, explore your options. Once in college there is going to be no hand holding whatsoever. And ask questions when you have doubts and queries. But expecting people to spoon feed you and do your research for you is just not going to cut it.

Yes I realized that and I am sorry for asking stupid questions like that. I did my research and I know what the transcripts are.
Typically a A4 Sheet with all your 9/10/11/12 GPA and courses. Since India doesnt have a GPA system I suppose we have to send our normal marks and rank in the classroom/standard ?
It need to be made by the principal, signed and stamped by the principal.

Need to confirm : Do you also send the Transfer Certificate with Transcripts ? Is it mendatory to send the CBSE 10th Marksheet ? Is this sent via Mail/Courier or Online ?

Yes the Final Report Card of all classes of High School grades need to be signed, stamped and sent in a school envelope separately for verification. Your counsellor or Principal can sign and verify.

I contacted UC and well no matter what they are not up for accepting a sat score after decemeber test.
They also said transcripts are not required to be send but if they extend an offer of admission they will ask for it.
What do they mean by that ?

Also like seriously I have to send the ugly report card of 11 ? Can’t it just sit in one A4 Size sheet with other classes ?

So the Final Report copied signed and stamped are to be sent only after the admission offer. You report your marks in the application when you file it. The verified documents are to be sent only when offered admission.

"When you apply to UC, you are required to report your academic record within the UC application.*You don’t need to submit your academic record to UC at this point, but you should refer to it as you fill out the application to ensure the information you enter is accurate.

Freshman applicants: Record all courses and marks/grades earned exactly as reported by the international school — whether as numbers, letters, percentages or words."

Hey guys, I have a doubt regarding the UC app as well (:

When they are asking for “Degree, diploma, or certification received or to be received”
They have the following options -
High School Diploma
IB Diploma
GED
Certificate of Proficiency
Other
and, if other, please specify.

So, for someone studying the CBSE curriculum, what will the certificate I receive after 12th, be called?

…I didn’t signed up for sat this year.
I will focus on my 12 these two months to get a good percentage in my finals and then I’ll give the June SAT and October SAT II
I guess doing this will be called taking a “gap” right ? I’ll be doing a lot of stuff in gap fulfilling my passion to learn a second instrument and do freelancing which I always wanted to do but got hindered by the school stuff.

I have decided on this but still just for a reconciliation with my soul I need to know- will this affect my chances of applying for a college for Fall 2015 year ?
And are there any other stuff you would recommend to someone who takes such decision ?
Thanks.
And Thank you anialways, you were so helpful. I’ll hopefully come to CC after giving 12th boards and join some conversation up sometime heheh and ofcourse ask more doubts and stuff.

Gap year can be used most productively. Like you mentioned learning a musical instrument and freelancing. So that would also make for a good essay if you really follow your passion.

Something else you could do is Intern at some place related to academics that you wish to pursue in college.

And get a great SAT score along with solid Class 12 GPA, because that is one of the first filters for your college applications.

Read and research as much as you can about the colleges that you would like to apply to.

And I think you would be an equally competitive candidate for the Class of 2015, regardless of the gap year.
