Hello there, I've been reading a lot of informative stuff on this website lately but this is my first thread/post.
I am a High School student, 12th grade(final year) from India, currently residing in India.
Aspiring to continue my undergrad studies from a US University more particularly a UC.
I've researched about UCs and I am very confused regarding their application and deadlines.

First of all referring to - Dates and Deadlines
December 7 2013 is the final opportunity for giving SAT.
But referring to the same, the filing period is given as NOV 1-30 2013.
Now my confusion arises as the Application Requisites your Transcripts (my school results ? please correct me if I am wrong), SAT/ACT Scores..etc Now since I will be giving my SAT in DEC how am I supposed to fill up the application ?

Same goes with my Transcripts, since I'll be giving 2014 Board Exams, which will most probably happen in February I will not be able to provide those either.
I am confused how am I supposed to fill up the application.

The other thing that is eating me up is my 10th and 11th grades, to be honest, I have performed average in my 10th and 11th classes mostly because I didn't had any ambition but since then Ive realized and have worked hard in 12th and I'll surely get over 85 in boards if not 90. I would love if anyone who has been through or have the knowledge over this to enlighten me up.
Thank you.

What I understand is you will be taking SATs on 7th December. Is this your first attempt at SATs? If yes, the 7 December SAT result will be out 3 weeks from that date.

So what you do is fill up the UC application by 30 November and mention that you are taking SATs on 7 December. And then send in the score when they become available.

As for transcripts, it is a one page document reflecting academics all 4 years of High School i.e. 9/10/11/12. This would include subjects taken, grades, percentage, percentile, class rank, number of students… For Class 12send in the Half Yearly scores and send in the Final scores when they become available in May. If I am correct your class 12 score
deadline is July 2014. You would still have to send Final Report Card for
each of these grades stamped and signed by your school and sealed in a
school envelope.

Registration deadline for 7 December SATs is 8th November. So make sure you do not miss that.

1-30 November is the filing period of your UC application. You can keep updating the application once it is filed with SAT score, Class 12 Half Yearly grades and subsequently the Final scores as well.

Thank you for your reply ;w; (like seriously thank you)

And as I mentioned I haven’t really performed ‘my brightest’ st in 10th/11th, even though I have still topped till B and some A’s in Science and English (few times when someone would challenge me) but that is not overall

Yes I am registering today for SAT, is it possible to convince them somehow to think of me over my 12th result and SAT score ? I’ll take SAT and SAT II Physics and Mathematics Lvl 2C, I can also give the chemistry test but I don’t think I could make 800 in that…

While SAT Subject Tests are not required, some campuses recommend that freshman applicants interested in competitive majors take the tests to demonstrate subject proficiency.

“Recommended SAT Subject Tests
Remember, these are recommendations, not mandates. You will not be penalized for failing to take the SAT Subject Tests. On the other hand, submission of these test scores (just like submission of AP and/or IB scores) may add positively to the review of your application.”

My advise to you is take the 25th Jan Subject SATs, because the subject SAT scores are sometimes used to fulfil a requirement or to jump to next level of course. And you never know, you could send scores to them at a later date explaining that you are an International student and in absence of a school counsellor you missed taking them earlier.

Also you may think of other options for college applications where you could send the Jan Subject SAT scores.

Do you have any other colleges for recommendation in california ?

Last night I was thinking since I messed up I could like just give the 12th finals for now and then, I could get enough time to prepare for SAT for SAT II and by enough I mean 750+ in all subjects then I could use them to apply for Fall 2015 for better universities ? Would I still be considered a Freshman, even though I’ll waste a year in that way.
Its possible to give SAT after your school ends right ? And is what I am thinking reasonable or should I just apply now ?

Why are you thinking it so much. Stay in the moment. Think what all you can do to between now and Fall 2014 to make your application competitive.

Just give December SATs and January Subject SATs. And more importantly focus on 12th Finals. Since your Boards get over in February plan to utilize the period between Feb and September with some work experience or Internship related to the program that you are applying to. Write a great essay. And go from there. You are going to be fine. Hopefully you will get into a good place of your choice.

You don’t understand… I have realized I can’t make my application competitive enough this year, I can try but there are more chances I’ll be denied and the denial means like every other person I’ll probably have to chase to an engineering college in India like IIT or something which is difficult and not something of my choice. $51 for SAT which I don’t think I am yet capable of scoring 750 in critical reading, $51+$51 for subject test which they may count or not as well as $80 per campus which is something I can afford once but not again, and as I stated my previous year records are just average but I’m determined to show my improvement in 12th. There are chances that board result may take till June which will just put me in problem. I want them to see I’ve improved from 11th to 12th, improved a lot, which will increase my chances by a lot, right ? Also I’ll get enough time to prepare for SAT and get a good score. And I’ll have a lot better chance for getting in a great college in Fall 2015.

Tell me, is taking a break like this dangerous ? Will the college decline me just because there was a gap after my High School or similar thing ? Ill continue my music classes and probably take a part time job as a freelance programmer.

What you do with your gap year is important. Taking a gap year is entirely up to you. What I am saying as a parent is do what is required of you NOW.

You can take SATs multiple times. Although I would not recommend taking them more than 2 times. Maybe your first time score is great enough. Maybe you score in the upper 50 percentile of admitted students of Class of 2013. Remember it just one of the filters for your application. It is the only standardised test available to level the playing. So go for it. Students from India usually do well because all their school lives they have been trained to be competitive test takers.

And I do understand where you are coming from. I am just throwing up options for you to think over. So practice SATs 6-8 times before you finally take them in December, time yourself and you will get a rough idea on how good your score can be.

It will be better if you take SAT after your boards. Take some time to prepare for the SAT and you will score good. Boards are important for you right now than anything. You can take the exam in May or June.

My opinion, do not drop a year without trying. So take the Dec Jan SATs and then go from there. The May/ June option will always be there. Why underestimate yourself and give up without even trying. And in any case you cannot go back and change your past grades. They will be what they are whether you apply now or next year. Give it a shot. At least you are thinking it through. That is a good thing. So you will make sound decisions. But take those decisions when it is time to do so. NOW is the time to try and do the best you can. That is what I would tell my child.

agghhhh! OKAY! I am down for it! I’ll give it a shot-
Guide me through please
1 - SAT I Dec - avg for those people admitted in UC are 620 680 670, I can do better than those I believe I can!
2 - GPA heres where I get F’d up
My 9th grades - English - A, Maths - B-, Science - B, Social Science - B, Hindi - C
My 10th grades - English - A Maths - B , Science - A, Social Science - C, Hindi - C
My 11th grades - English - 80, Maths - 46, Physics - 50, Chemistry - 68, CS - 88
12th - Don’t have
3 - VISA - NOPE
4 - And as you said there might be chance that I could send January test scores ? Please explain over this
5 - NO One knows when Boards result will come it can be May or June or Even July! ← THIS Is the 2nd major problem here

Your 9/10 Hindi and Social Science is the something I would not worry too much about. But Class 11 Math, Physics and Chemistry…seriously low. But you cannot change that. What you can do is try to get a substantial jump in those scores in Half Yearly and PreBoards. Those are the ones you will be sending in at the time of application. Because that is the only way to overlook Class 11 scores.

And Class 12 Finals you should not worry about the timing of availability as you have no control over them and therefore you will not be penalised for sending them later than later than July 1. Your school will have to let the colleges know that.

Visa comes in to play only after the acceptance and admission offer. So that is not an issue at all.

January SAT scores would be part of updating your application. that is how I see it. And if they are good they will again make your application competitive and also help overlook your 11th class not so stellar grades. And you could always explain them in a personal statement or essay which could include not being mature and responsible enough but you did manage to learn your lesson which should get reflected in Class 12 treads and SAT scores and LORs.
