Congrats on all those acceptances, now chance me :D!

Im a HS junior, in NY but I have a parent in VA and since we aren't well of financially and I have a twin also needing to attend school, instate is what I'm gonna have to shoot for which isn't a bad thing

I know that the big top schools in VA are really expensive and competitive, the only one that I think I would have a chance at is American and thats still wayyy beyond what I could pay even with F.A. and scholarships, and JMU I know is a pretty good school and that I think will be one of my target schools for VA, my sister went to UMW a few years back. Im also curious as to if I'm setting my sights too high or too low with this school

-I go to a small school in NY, my grade only has about 100 students, my cumulative GPA is a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale

-I haven't taken my SAT's yet but based on PSAT scores they should be hovering around 1850, but my Writing is easily my strongest and I'm likely to get above a 700 on that so if the Writing portion isn't taken into consideration we could be looking at a lower score for sure considering Math is a weak point

I wil have taken 6'AP's at the end of HS, 1 as a Soph, 3 in Junior year, 2 next year

-When there weren't AP classes offered I took honors so probably 3 or 4 honors classes

-Not great on EC's. At the end of HS I will have been Pres. of one club for 3 years, member of Amnesty, and NHS in Junior and Senior,

-Outside of school I have like 400 hours of comm. service mainly from this youth group typed thing outside of school, I was President of that for a little while

So I guess thats everything that you would need to chance me. Again is JMU too high or too low of a target school for me. I mean I have done a little research and it does seem like a good competitive school, but I have seen some pretty low scores get in so I'm curious, thanks!

JMU only looks at CR and M scores for SAT. You may also want to consider taking he ACT… some students find they score higer or one test than the other. JMU will accept ether.

If finances are an issue it sounds like you are looking at state schools in NY and VA where you would qualify for in-state tuition because a parent lives there? American is a private university in Washington DC.

JMU tends to be a bit more GPA and EC driven than test score driven, from what understand. If you go on the JMU admissions website you can see who your regional admissions coordinator is… [Coleman Bonner - Admissions Counselor](http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/info/regionalcounselors/profiles/coleman.shtml) he would be able to give you a sense of what kinds of classes you should be taking in order to be competitive for admission to JMU.

It looks like JMU could be a target school for you… what do you think you might like to major in? VA has many wonderful state schools, some of the larger schools tend to have a reputation for being stronger in specific areas… EX. JMU for education and arts… VTech for engineering and sciences (this does not mean that the programs are not strong at both… just in terms of reputation). :)

Ughh well that part about the Writing section not being considered is disappointing lol but nevertheless my SAT shouldnt be that horrendous that I would have no chance of getting in, and im probably going to take the ACT next fall

Well as far as I know, JMU is one of the best public schools in VA, that I could actually afford. As for majors im really not too positive, I am strongly leaning towards a career in law so I would probably look for a school with the strongest programs that would apply to a law career.

Wow lol that was fast, I already recieved a response. He told me that JMU DOES NOT look at HS Gpa because of the fact that there are so many different scales that schools use, they look more for students that have Mostly A’s and B’s

yeah… I should have said more grade driven than test score driven… meaning they look at your grades in your core courses and look to see that you have taken a rigorous course load in relationship to the courses offered at your school. :)

Just a side note… American University is NOT in Virginia, nor is it a public school so instate wouldn’t matter.

As for JMU, they are completely focused on your grades and rigor of your classes and dont seem to care much for SAT scores or extracurriculars. The personal statement is also a big factor. Also once you apply make sure you’re first semester senior year grades are good because that’s also a deciding factor!
