Male OOS, unweighted GPA 3.4, SAT 1880, 6 AP's and 2 Syracuse classes by the time I graduate,3yrs.track and cross country, 4yrs school newspaper, local Press internships, (interested in Journalism), worked full time every summer,.some community service. My high school counselor thought I'd have no problem getting in, but it seems iffy on this site.

don’t sweat it your in kid. If its your favorite then apply ED, sit back waiting for your acceptance letter, and then coast from December until the end of August

abguitar is giving you some bad advice. If you get accepted early action and coast for the rest of the year, they will rescind your acceptance. They explicitly say this on their admissions web page.

I don’t believe I’d fall off the cliff, I am going to apply early action, so I can relax a little though. Do you think they would offer any scholarship $$ to an out of stater?

My daughter was put on a waitlist with a 3.4 GPA and a lot of APs, volunteer service, etc. She got off the waitlist (lucky kid), moved in last week, and LOVES this school. Kids she knows with higher stats did not get in. I think they really do try to look at the whole person on the application. Meeting/writing to/getting to know your regional admissions representative couldn’t hurt, either. That way they at least know of your genuine interest in the school. If JMU visits your school, make sure to go and talk to the admissions rep personally if given the chance. As a parent, dealing with this school has been a pleasure. I have another child at another VA State school, and JMU has them beat when it comes to communications and interactions with the parents. They do an excellent job of guiding freshmen into being independent during their orientation program. I feel she is in very good hands.

How long did she have to wait to find out she was accepted? Everyone that I know that is at JMU loves the school.

Students who apply Early Action are notified by the second week in January if they are accepted, rejected, or deferred to Regular Decision.

Regular Decision applicants are notified by April 1st.

Good Luck! :)

She got off the list about one month after regular decision letters went out. We lost a deposit ($500) we had put down at another school, but no regrets – because JMU was her first choice all along. I just thought it was worth mentioning, because she was so incredibly happy to pulled off the waitlist. So, if you are waitlisted, you should definitely let the school know that you are interested in getting off the list. As a mom, it was a long year helping her through the process of visiting and applying to schools, and you really get kind of emotionally involved. It is kind of hard to let all of this go now (I guess that’s why I’m still visiting this site). I should let it rest for a year until it’s time for our third child to start applying! Anyway, a waitlist is just that – you still have a good chance! If it’s your first choice/hope/dream, make sure they know it! JMU is a great school.
