Our son received the Trustee and an additional University Scholarship of $4,000. Does anyone know what that is?

It’s money!!!

The University Scholarships are the “extra” scholarships some of us noted are often added to the Trustee, Presidential or Dean’s scholarships. Things to know about University Scholarships:

Unlike the Trustee/Pres/deans, they are not restricted to tuition and can replace work/study or loans in a need-based aid package (rather than reducing grants). My recommendation is to request that they replace the Stafford subs rather than work/study.

University scholarships are for 4 years, so really it is a $16,000 scholarship! Yay!

In later years, the University Scholarship may change to a named scholarship (e.g. it may become something like, “The Jane Doe Endowed Scholarship Fund…”). Nothing about the scholarship changes but its name. If next year you get a mysterious FA email saying that a change has been made to your aid and you see No changes, check the name of your University Scholarship!

Congratulations!

^ Do these scholarships only show up once your FA package has been completed?

It appears USC is attempting to have an earlier timetable this year, but in the last several years financial aid packages were, in general, complete by the end of the first week of April. University scholarships have been added throughout April, even as late as the last week of April, but I saw a blog posting earlier this week (I think it was on the USC admissions site) saying that University Scholarships would be added by the first week of April - so maybe they will all be done by then this year.

An important note about FA packages: components are added bit-by-bit, so if you check your FA page before USC emails saying it is complete you may see a partial package. Don’t panic until you get an email from USC FA saying your package is complete.

Good luck!

Do we have to submit the FAFSA and CSS profile in order to be considered for scholarships?

where do you look to see if you have a “university scholarship” on top of one of the other scholarships?

@RCLVRR, no the FAFSA and/or CSS/Profile are not required for scholarship consideration. To be considered for merit scholarships, you must have submitted your application on or before December 1st, 2013.

@actstudent - I am assuming they are seeing them on the financial aid summary (I cannot be more specific because I do not have one at which to look). PLEASE remember that in my experience, the scholarships are not added all at once and have in years past appeared even in late April.

@alamemom if I didn’t apply for financial add does this mean I won’t be getting a “university scholarship” with the trustee?

@actstudent , no the FAFSA and/or CSS/Profile are not required for scholarship consideration.

@alamemom under my financial aid section I have “status check page”, “required info and forms,” and “applying for financial aid.” Of these I would assume it would be under “status check page,” but when I click this it just says we have not received any application documents for federal aid. Am I looking in the right spot?

@actstudent

I don’t know if you are looking in the right spot as I don’t have a USConnect account If you are not yet seeing your Trustee Scholarship on your financial aid summary (I saw one poster suggested looking under the “gift aid” tab??? Again, I can’t give specific instructions 'cause I don’t have a USConnect!) then it is likely your file just hasn’t yet been updated (it is Sunday, guys!).

Give it at least until the end of the first week of April!

And just to say it one more time, no, you need not have applied for need-based aid to be considered for and to receive merit aid including University Scholarships. All scholarships however will show up on the financial aid summary.

@alamemom thanks so much! Your information is always so reliable!

Finally. Son notified received Presidential for Marshall and WBB

Great news! Congrats!

Has anyone ever heard of a student appealing a merit scholarship decision? Just curious.

I imagine many have asked for a Dean’s or a Presidential to be increased. I have never heard of an adjustment being made to a Dean’s or Presidential once the notifications have been sent. From the FAQ:
http://www.usc.edu/programs/ugprograms/aif/faqscholars.htm

That said, there is nothing stopping you from asking The worst they can do is say, “no.”

Considering most Freshman attend with no merit money, it seems rather greedy to me to even ask for a better scholarship!

@CollegeMom48 I thank you dearly for your judgment. Asking a question sure is greedy!

Alamemom mentioned occasions when a university scholarship becomes a named scholarship. The amount remains the same. It sometimes happens an alumna or alumnus will endow a scholarship for a junior or senior student and that endowed scholarship will cover the funding.

^My son’s has changed names each year. He is a junior now.
