Hi I am trying to decide between attending Conn, Gettysburg, or Dickison. I am planning to double major in Economics and Enviromental studies. they are all relitively the same price and I have food allergies to Gluten, soy, and am vegan. I don’t like Greek life but love going clubs and doing activitites. What school is the best fit?
Hello! I am a current Gettysburg freshman and absolutely love the school (so I might give a bit of a biased answer but here goes :)). I am a Biology major and Neuroscience minor, and I have had an incredible experience with both departments. The sciences at gburg are very involved and engaging - the professors are absolutely incredible and always so willing to help. I recently got involved with research within the biology department and will be staying over the summer as a research intern (something that I never thought I could do as a freshman). You are looking at smaller schools, which is definitely a huge asset to the college educational experience in my opinion. The professors are easy to access and learn your name - you are not just a number at gburg. Gburg is among the top colleges for “value” and “classroom experience.”
You mentioned your food allergies - my dad and sister are both allergic to gluten, dairy, and eggs, and have been able to eat with me at Servo (the school’s dining hall) multiple times. Gluten free and vegan options are always labeled (GF) or (VG) when you are in Servo, so you shouldn’t have a problem. Servo is rated #10 in the nation as the best college dining hall, so that says a lot! There are so many options and they have amazing desserts!
As for your prospective majors, you definitely get the best of both worlds with the sciences and an Econ focus. The ES department at Gettysburg is also incredible, for example, you can take a class on tropical terrestrial biology and goes to Peru to the amazon rainforest to study biodiversity! I am not too familiar with economics, but I know that it is one of the most popular majors at gburg and the department is very strong (not the mention that classes are in glatfelter - which is a beautiful building!).
I also did not really care for Greek life. There is definitely a greek presence on campus, but it can be ignored and there are other things to do on the weekend. My friends and I typically go to town (super quaint!) and shop or eat at one of the restaurants. Gburg has a ton of extracurriculars - dance, intramural sports, volunteering clubs, even more random clubs like beekeeping club. Definitely check out their clubs page!
Study abroad was one of the main reasons I chose Gettysburg. It is included in your tuition and just about 60% of students study abroad at some point (typically junior year). The study abroad programs are incredibly immersive and you can study in practically any country. You are able to conduct research while abroad, take language classes, and so much more.
Just to wrap up a bit (sorry for the long reply!), gburg is a very close knit community and has tons of traditions (also in part due to its historic past). If you are looking for a smaller community that still has a huge number of opportunities (and connections once you graduate and start you job search/grad school applications), gburg is perfect. Best of luck! Feel free to ask questions if you have any
