On Tuesday I have to take the ACT. The state pays for it, and it's a graduation requirement, so I can't skip it. The thing is, I took the ACT in September and got 36/36/36/36. I can't do better this time. I was thinking that I could just take it and cancel my score the next day. If I do, do colleges see that I took it and cancelled my score? And should I cancel it? I haven't done any prep this time and I think I would get somewhere in the 32-35 range. Maybe worse.

Thanks in advance

I’m in the same predicament (36 in February, graduation requirement to retake next week). Your school probably uses the data to grade its performance relative to other schools and it has to have a data point for every student. That means that whether you cancel it or not, you are going to have a score from this test. If you cancel the score, it’ll show up as a 0.

The good news is that for the majority of colleges, you can select which scores to submit. On the student information section of the test, make sure to opt not to send your score to any schools. In most cases, you’ll be able to hide your second ACT entirely. Talk to your guidance counselor when you start applying about the exact mechanics of score reporting.

Dropping a couple points isn’t a good thing, obviously, but getting a 36 and a 34 looks basically the same as just getting the 36.

My guess is that you would not have the option for score choice on this school-mandated exam. At least here, the high school puts the score on your transcript. I would definitely check that out before I cancelled the score and had a score of zero on my transcript.

Thanks for the advice, I took it on Tuesday and I think I did pretty well, so I won’t cancel it. Like HateBeinSober said, I guess it’s not a big deal if I drop one or two points.

And yeah, the main reason I was asking is my top choice doesn’t allow score choice.

All the colleges claim that they look at your highest score any way – even the ones that don’t allow score choice. You should be fine.

HateBeinSober – What is the deal with your screen name? It is pretty daring considering that we are all underage. Is there some story that goes with it? Or does it speak for itself? Congrats on your great score, BTW. Whatever works, I guess.

wait so if you take the ACT/SAT and cancel your scores, colleges know you took it? o.O

^please disregard my ignorance.

@smokymyngirl “I hate being sober” is a hilarious rap song by Chief Keef. It is all that is wrong with rap music - I assume said CC’er is making fun of Chief Keef’s lack of musical ability.
