Consequences of Underage Drinking Violation

Hello all, I am a senior who is awaiting admission decisions from his colleges (in case you all need to know, mostly ivy leagues). I'll get the answers around the end of this month.

I was wondering about how colleges reserve the right to repeal your admission decision until your first day of college. If I get an underage drinking violation this summer, between the time I get my decision and my first day at the school, do you think there's a likely chance I will be denied entrance to the school? Do they check for that sort of stuff and are the consequences that severe? Please and thanks.

(Also, please do not lecture about how drinking is immoral and irresponsible. I do not ever drink. I am just wondering in case something goes awry for me during graduation or something and I get caught)

They don’t check for that sort of stuff. You are required to tell them of any such offense. They can and do revoke diplomas years later if this sort of thing is discovered and the student didn’t come forward.

They usually don’t ask, and even if they did, as long as you’re honest about it, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Underage drinking happens. It’s treated like a speeding ticket.

I always think of is story when bad advice as that above pops up. Colleges take drinking much more seriously before you hit their campus than when you do. Though you will get kicked out there too.

Here’s a 5th generation Princeton legacy with the stats who got kicked out of a very top high school and didn’t get into Princeton over a single drinking episode:

<a href=“Colleges and Universities - Education and Schools - Admissions and Testing - SAT - The New York Times”>Colleges and Universities - Education and Schools - Admissions and Testing - SAT - The New York Times;

Big difference between drinking in school and drinking after graduating. Anything that risks your ability to graduate risks your ability to get into school.

Maybe if you go to a private school that has some kind of arcane post-graduate degree-retracting policy, it could become an issue. Or if they notify the school when transcripts are requested (still not sure the school would care). Otherwise, there’s no way the school would even find out about it unless you were on the national news or something. I’ve never heard of a school looking into the “back home” lives of enrolled students and they definitely don’t ask.

OP, you sound like you are considering drinking as part of your graduation celebration. I’m not going to lecture you on the morality of underage drinking but do you really think it’s smart for you to take the risk? If you don’t drink now, why start then when you still have so much to lose.

Unfortunately, having your college acceptance retracted is not the worst thing that can happen to you if you indulge in pre-college drinking. You really need to think long and hard about it, even if no one you know ever gets caught. Everyone’s luck runs out sooner or later.
