Considering a transfer to Wake...thoughts?

I am currently a freshman at Barnard College at Columbia University in New York City. I'm not entirely unhappy, but it was not quite what I was looking for. The all-female dynamic isn't for me, the faculty and students are generally uninspiring and I frequently find myself thinking I made a mistake. I want a bigger, more rigorous school. I will miss New York, but the school community just isn't right for me.

What do you think about this decision? What do you like about WF? Not like? What are my chances? Thoughts on the surrounding area and social life?

I have a roughly 3.5 gpa (I honestly don't know...mostly A's and one B in a 3000 level course), am involved in community service, and have no record of suspensions/other disciplinary issues.

THanks!

You should investigate how many of your credits will transfer over. I remember someone posting awhile ago that WF does not accept a lot (think it goes by department, but I am not sure)
My D loves WF. She is a Freshman, loves her classes, and enjoys dorm life. The campus is beautiful and the people are very nice. Not much of a college town, but I hear that the college owns land in a section of town by the football/basketball complexes and they are going to redo that whole area.

My daughter transferred to Wake Forest after her freshman year at NYU. She loved New York City but had trouble with how impersonal NYU was. I think she had something like a 3.45 when she applied for transfer. It was a good move for her and things are all going well both academically (now has a 3.8 GPA) and socially as well. She is currently in her junior year.

As mentioned by Elizabeth90505, credits turned out to be a surprising issue. We thought that there would be no loss of credits, but there were. The reason for this had to do with how both schools credited their courses. NYU had many 4 credit courses. Similar courses at Wake were only 3 credits. Therefore this was all she got credit for. She attended one of the two summer sessions last summer and is now all caught up.

The only other issue she had was that she was put in a freshman dorm (along with a number of other transfers). She was able to move elsewhere after her first semester.

One thing I can say about this as a parent is that Wake Forest was wonderful to deal with throughout this process. They were always accessible and responded immediately whether it was by email or phone. Nothing like the difficulties we had with NYU. I hope this helps.

jda71 is so right - everyone I have talked to there has been so kind and helpful.
Not wanting to hijack your thread londonriot, so I will add that if you are looking for a residential college with rigorous academics Wake may be the place for you. As you probably know, about 75% of students live on campus, and although the town is fine, it seems like the students mostly hang out on campus and go to parties on the weekends, or attend football/basketball games. My D has met some great friends in her dorm, one has a car, and it sounds like they get off campus for shopping, movies, etc. about 1-2x per week. D was just saying the weekends were getting boring, when finals started getting close and now it sounds like she is just too busy with papers and studying.

My D also applied to NYU, but chose Wake. Seems like there are a few of you out there that looked seriously at both schools. If you have any really specific questions, I can forward them to her. Good luck!!!
