Considering ED - early aid estimate questions

D would like to apply ED, but it may not be possible financially. She wants to submit for an early aid estimate.
If she does this, and then decides not to apply ED, can she still apply under RD, and will she be penalized in the admissions process if she applies RD?
In other words, will there be an assumption that if she didn't apply ED after the aid estimate, that she wouldn't attend and therefore decrease her chance of admission?

I'd hate for her to negatively impact her application by seeking the early aid estimate.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I would recommend going ahead and doing the early aid estimate. Your daughter will still be able to apply under RD if you have reservations about committing financially, and there is no special penalty for that. I always assume that students like that are kind of a toss-up, yield-wise, because the student clearly wants to come, but someone in the family has reservations about the finances, and I’ve never let that negatively affect an admissions recommendation.
