Considering ISU

Hey ladies and gentleman, I am considering ISU because my counselor recommended it to me due to ISU supposedly being a "magnet for pre-vets." Becoming a DVM is my overall objective but I want a BS first. If I went to ISU, I would probably pick Animal Sciences, Microbiology, or Biochemistry as my major. My main question(s) are:

Does ISU have strong programs that would help me get into Vet School?

Is choosing ISU over some other school I am looking at (UM-TC, IndU, KSU), better for me in the long run?

I truly appreciate it,
ZG

i know that the majors you mention are strong in ISU…

ISU is huge in ag and animal science and many present on our visit day were there for pre-vet. It appeared to me that, as you mention, there are numerous undergrad degree programs appropriate for pre-vet. We were impressed with the high level of attention and advising we found, although we were there looking at biology in the ag school.

As for comparisons of specific schools’ programs, that would probably take some fairly extensive and specific research on your part. Good luck!

Another thing to consider is that vet school has a low acceptence rate and ISU Vet college I believe has to have so many from Iowa. If you go to ISU for undergrad, you would gain Iowa residency and be eligible for instate tution to a great vet program.

I would double-check the rules of state residency. At this point in our college search I’m starting to get the states’ rules mixed up, but if I’m not mistake IA requires a full year of non-student employment for residency. More and more states are eliminating full time student status as a ticket to residency.

True, but if the OP lived in Iowa Jr/Sr year of completeing his undergrade would qualify them for instate tuition for Vet school, which would save them about $20,000 per year.
plus, I believe that ISU has a quota for in state students

Really? That would be fantastic for many of us, but on this page it says that to be in the state primarily for educational purposes does not qualify as residency. Or am I missing something?

I guess the OP would have to get a long term job in Iowa first. I wonder what they mean by that. could they just get a full time job in a lab or with some company for 2 years while going to college/ over the summers for a long term job?
