I'm considering transferring from the University of Michigan to Columbia. I just started my MS in biostatistics this fall. Here's the story: Columbia did not admit me into their MS Biostats program (kept my app very late, so I figured I had a good chance but just missed it?) but I did get into the MS at Umich. For nonacademic reasons (location, distance from home), oppertunites in my field around CU, and because Columbia was always my first choice, I'm considering transferring. Since the Biostat dept. at CU doesn't admit in the spring, and they only accept 1 semester's worth of credit, my only option is to apply to their MA in Statistics.

Does anyone think this is a downgrade? UM School of Public Health- MS in biostats to Columbia GSAS MA in Stats (which is a one year program).

Do you think my chances at being admitted into stats are better either 1) after being at UM for a semester or 2) the stats dept. isn't selective as the biostats?

Does anyone know the quality of the MA in Stats program at CU? It's a pretty short program, but I would likely take more electives than required in Biostats/Public Policy.

How would I approach writing a statement of purpose? I'm still interested in Biostats so how do I convey this without sounding like I'm applying to the MA simply because the Biostats didn't admit?

Sorry about the length and TIA! Much appreciated.
