Consolidated Fall 2010 UC Transfer Chances

<p>Applying: Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, maybe Davis</p>

<p>GPA: 4.0</p>

<p>Major: Political Science</p>

<p>IGETC/Pre-Reqs: Done with all pre-reqs. Need two sciences and one math for IGETC. Taking the math class next semester.</p>

<p>EC: Intership with Congresswoman</p>

<p>Stats:</p>

<p>Applying to: UCB UCLA UCSB</p>

<p>GPA: 4.0
Major: Political Science
EC’s: gov internship, tutoring homeless children, (actress/ singer) performances
Essays: They should be good…
TAP with Berkeley
Units: 60 (will complete by spring)
Pre Reqs/ IGETC done by Spring</p>

<p>Non traditional student</p>

<p>^How does the TAP with Berkeley work?</p>

<p>Berkeley’s Transfer Alliance Program is designated for students who are academically disadvantaged (minority, location, first generation student, etc), come from low-income families, and maintain high GPAs. It’s not really a popular program and not a lot of students actually know about it… But I heard that 80-90% of Cal’s TAP students are admitted. Sigh.</p>

<p>I qualified because I am an independent student, and I would be first generation university grad, I am Caucasian though… so you don’t have to be extremely poor or a minority to apply. Ask a Berkeley rep if you qualify. You do have to have good grades though.</p>

<p>Current School: Moorpark College (UGH!! DOUBLE UGGH! But have gone to tulane/univ. miami in the past)
Major: Maybe Linguistics…unsure
College GPA: 3.55 now, projected 3.64 after the fall (hoping to get a 4.0 for fall) (50 units so far–getting to 64 by end of fall, and 80/81 by end of spring).
IGETC/Major Preps: Hopefully most done by spring!
ECs: I take a lot of time to study and get good grades (i had a 3.8 until last semester…i was severly depressed and almost dropped out of college…did not do well…so that’s what brought me down!)
otherwise, spectrUM (which is the queer alliance at Univ. Miami,) QuantUM (film society,) work 12 hours a week average. That’s about it! I wish I had done more though…
Essays: I love writing and try to be creative and say things people have not said before, so I guess 8/10 maybe 9/10., I don’t even know the prompt yet so it’s hard to say haha. I have traveled abroad a bit so I guess that could enhance the essay since I can compare US culture to like taiwan culture maybe? And say how that shaped me as a student?</p>

<p>I will be applying tooooo:</p>

<p>1) UCLA
2) UC Berkeley (i know it’s a long shot but it can’t hurt to try, eh eh?)
3) UC Santa Barbara (come on. it’s friggin gorgeous! Prestigous, and not so hard to transfer into.)
4) SFSU (oh oops this isn’t a Uc…haha)
5) UC Santa cruz</p>

<p>and that seems to be it.
:)</p>

<p>Thanks everybody!</p>

<p>^ I would stay away from SFSU there are no classes there. Most of my friends were lucky to get 12units if that. Plus it really should be called Daly City State Unvi, because its on the border of SF and DC.</p>

<p>I’m torn between applying for Political Science or History at UCLA. I will not be able to complete the pre-reqs for Political Science by the end of Spring, but I will be able to complete the pre-reqs for History. Should I let that be the deciding factor? Or is pre-req completion more important than having GE classes done? Thanks! My stats are below if that’s helpful:</p>

<p>Current School: Pasadena City College</p>

<p>GPA: 3.9 (after one year, 31 units).</p>

<p>Applying to: UCLA, USC (others? must stay in LA area).</p>

<p>Work: I’ve been working full time for four years at a large television studio as a producer for new media. For the last year I’ve been going to school full time as well. I’ve been part of winning several industry awards (Emmy’s, Webby’s, etc).</p>

<p>High School EC’s: President of my National Charity League Chapter, Cheerleading, Girl Scouts, Crew, Professional Actor, Working at a non profit.</p>

<p>Why are there so many Political Science majors?</p>

<p>I’m a one-year transfer at COC
GPA: 3.7(projected 3.9 after fall).
Major: Philosophy
Schools: UCB, UCLA, USC
Chances?</p>

<p>AMorrison: Apply as a History major. UCLA is very strict about prereqs.</p>

<p>I’m going to be applying to UCB/UCLA/UCSD for sophomore standing.
Current Year: Freshman
GPA: don’t have one yet…but most likely 3.9-4.0
College: CC in New York (I hate being an OOS)
HS GPA: 3.7ish (3.9 before sr. yr., like 3.2 my sr yr.-ouch!)
Num. Stats: SAT/2230(:‘{),SATIIMath2C/650(:’[), Biology/700,Chemistry/780, World History/790
Classes this year: Calc 1+2 and maaaaaaaaybe multivariate, Stat II, accelerated Chem, econ 100 and macroecon, german 1+2, Psych 100+250, accelerated pol sci., bio 100 (aghhh my stupid CC doesn’t let me go into advanced bio even though I got a 5 on the AP exam), eng 120+220
Projected major: Interdisciplinary studies (my current school doesn’t offer this, but UCB does, and it looks pretty cool). I want to get dual degrees in grad school, so I think this major is def. best for my goals</p>

<p>I have 23 credits from my AP exams, so by the end of this year (all things going as planned with class registration), I should have about 60.</p>

<p>I am also a research assistant with my college’s bio and psych depts., have started doing an internship at mt. sinai hospital (i don’t mean that volunteering b/s), and am going to start as a research assistant in a columbia BME lab soon.</p>

<p>I also help run a tutoring business with my dad (not very successful; only makes about 8K/yr) and have almost 1000 hrs of community service.</p>

<p>My college extracurrics (so far) are VP of a philosophy club, and an educator in my college Peer Health exchange.</p>

<p>I am looking to intern for a consulting firm this semester. </p>

<p>I have a lot more stuff, but I need to do my psych paper in like 10 mins.</p>

<p>So…any thoughts on my chances, anyone?? <em>hears a cricket</em></p>

<p>I know that I seem like I’m trying to OD my stats, but as an OOS CC student and a freshman at that), I have to be as competitive an applicant as humanly possible (aka I REALLY want to go to UCB).</p>

<p>melonbread, you applying to SUNYs? Also, UCs don’t count your HS GPA and test scores.</p>

<p>My stats:</p>

<p>Santa Monica College
Fall 2010 transfer, will have junior standing</p>

<p>3.77 college GPA, all classes transferable to UCs
English Literature Major (probably a Film Minor)
Will have pre-reqs, IGETC, and 60 semester units complete.</p>

<p>ECs: magazine internship, some paid freelance experience, volunteering as a production assistant with UCLA’s Graduate Film school, various part time jobs, photography, writing</p>

<p>Essays: Will most likely be good, but that’s just bc I’m an English major. I’m basically riding on the fact I’ll get into UCLA (fingers crossed!)</p>

<p>Applying to: UCLA (first choice) and UCSB’s College of Creative Studies (Literature) and maybe SDSU’s TFNM major with a Production emphasis</p>

<p>Good luck to everyone!</p>

<p>UCSD, most likely, but as safety xfers, since i had gotten into the best SUNYs my sr year (chose not to go b/c they were all in the middle of nowhere). Hmm, so would the UCs only look at my college GPa from 2 semseters? I’m actually a little worried that the UCs aren’t taking test scores, because I only have a years worth of college owrk to go by. Has anyone on CC actually been able to transfer into UCB/LA as a sophomore transfer?</p>

<p>lol so I finally decided to do this for kicks</p>

<p>Current School: Los Angeles Pierce College along with one class at Moorpark College
Major: Political Science
College GPA: 3.75
IGETC/Major Preps: Will be completed by the end of spring semester
ECs: Intern for the Mayor of the city of Los Angeles
Member of Sociology Club
Volunteer for the Barack Obama campaign 2007-2008.
Short stint with the Fund for Public Interest in late 2008.
Assistant for my high school’s Academic Decathlon team. Won a gold medal in the Academic Decathlon in 2007. Won a silver and a gold medal in the Academic Decathlon in 2008.
President for my high school’s Film Society during the 2007-2008 school year.
Is it okay to include stuff I did in high school?
Essays: They should be okay.
Applying to: Berkeley, UCLA, UCSB. Maybe UCSD, I haven’t decided yet. No TAP, honors program or TAG.</p>

<p>hey melonbread, i may be wrong but i was under the impression that ucb doesn’t take sophomore transfers anymore…thus forcing me to apply as a junior :\ though i would’ve done that anyways since i’m in state and get priority lol, and i’m worried about how few grades they’re gonna see also…they’re only gonna get my fall quarter grades :\ but o well, all i can do is hope for the best lol, i’d have finished all my major prereqs this fall so they’ll have those grades to go by</p>

<p>So I am only in my second semester as a CC student (not counting summer). I have only completed 25 units but I am taking 20 this semester (only 15 of them transfer one is a remedial Math class). I will be planning on taking 20 more units next semester to have 60 units. I REALLY want to transfer next fall, because of the budget cuts I don’t want to get stuck at my CC for an extra year. I plan on just going to a CSU if I can’t get into a UC because there admissions is basically guaranteed if you have above a 2.5 but I really want to go to a really good school.
Anyways I was really curious if anyone knew if they may just automaticaly deny my addmissions because I only will have 25 units COMPLETED at the time of admissions. I am hoping they may defer my enrollment to the Spring. I know Berkeley did this with almost 500 applicants last year. Does anyone know why Berkeley does this?
I also did one semester at Montana State- Billings. I was an idiot and dropped out of my class yet was too stupid to drop them and recieved a 0.0 in 12 units… I know my Math class weas definitely not a transfer level class… does the UC system factor this in?
Anyways if you could chance me please…</p>

<p>Schools applying: Cal, UCSB, UCSD (I really mostly want to go to Cal… if not I will most likely go to Humboldt State just because I love how beautiful the area is).
Major: Sociology (PreLaw)
GPA: 3.77
Units Completed: 25
Units that will be completed by Spring '10: 60
Major Prep: 4.0 (Cal only requires SOC 101, an evidence class that is not offered at my CC and Stats which I am taking next semester.
IGETC: Will be completed
ECs: Non traditional student, I took a year and a half after my first semester in Montana. In that time I did a 10 month full time AmeriCorps program. This program looks very very good on applications and will give me a lot to talk about for my essay since I lived in about 6 different communities in the 10 months. I also recieved a congressional medal for service as well as The Presidential Service award and clocked in over 1700 hours during the 10 months. I have other various volunteer opportunites as well as have held a job for a long time.
Ok I think I have included everything… thanks for your time!</p>

<p>"Why are there so many Political Science majors? "</p>

<p>Because it is the easiest subject to study. History, Political science, Philosophy majors tend to be jobless after grad school.</p>

<p>I’m bored, CHANCE ME CHANCE ME CHANCE ME.</p>

<p>Applying to:Berkeley
Major: Society and Environment
College GPA: 3.57
IGETC/Major Preps: Done/Done
ECs:Treasurer/ICC rep Veg Club, Free Thinkers Club, Honors Service Club</p>
